Are the American Express gift cards accepted as payment at stores like CVS, Walgreens and Target?

Absolutely! I think you can use them anywhere you'd be able to use an Amex card. The only sticky wicket is that for most stores, you have to know how much is on the card. So say you had a $50 gift card and your purchase total was $55, unless you give the cashier $5 cash and then put the remainder on the Amex card, the transaction will be rejected because the register will try to put the entire $55 on the card. Target is an exception to this - their registers magically know how much is on the card and only attempt to put that much on there.

What I like to do with Amex gift cards is use them as credit cards to buy store gift cards. So if I know I'm going to spend the money at CVS, I'll use my $50 Amex gift card to buy a $50 CVS gift card. Then I don't have to worry about how much is left on the gift card. I can use a little here, a little there, no problem.
