Makin' Money

Rite Aid
  • Olay Eye Roller $21.99 and two Olay moisturizers $8.99 each (one rang up with 10% discount so $8.09 and second was 50% off so $4.49), used $1 off $10 Wellness Coupon for skincare, FREE Eye Roller coupon (9/12 SS, max value $19.99, cashier took off $21.99 - I didn't correct her b/c she was giving me a really hard time) and two $1 Olay moisturizer coupons (9/12 SS) and got back $10 UP Reward (WYB $30 of qualifying items) = $0.42 profit
  • Tugaboos Diapers $0.89 ($0.99 reg price), used $1 coupon (found inside package I bought previously) = $0.11 profit
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon and two $2 UP's, total was $2.47

At another store, I did the same transaction again. The lotions here were a bit more expensive, so they rang up as $8.54 and $4.74. I've now spent $138.28 total on P&G items, and since this deal is tracking your purchases, if I spend another $11.72, I'll get back a fifth $10 UP. I'm thinking I'll get four Old Spice body washes/sprays. They're $4 each and I can use two BOGO coupons (9/26 P&G), so I'll pay $8 for $16 worth. I'll also get back $2 for SCR #62. So after the SCR, I'll only pay $6 and get back a $10 UP. Sounds good to me!

ShopRite - did the Kraft and the Nestle promos in this order

Kraft items:

  • 10 Philadelphia Cream Cheeses $0.99 each (limit 4 per variety), used two $5 coupons (adjusted down to $4.95 each) = FREE
  • 3 Crystal Lites $2.99 each
  • Kraft Mayo $2.49

Nestle items:

  • 4 CPK pizzas $4.50 each, used four $1 coupons (9/26 SS) = $3.50 each
  • Nestle semi sweet choc. chips $1.99 ($2.29 shelf price counted towards the promo)
  • Total was $27.49 and I got back $40 in cats - $20 for Kraft and $20 for Nestle = $12.51 profit!

The only thing better than free groceries is making money buying them! If you haven't done this deal yet, you get back four $5 cats for each deal. Each one is good during a specific week for those items (ie. Kraft cats good for Kraft products only). This deal runs into next week as well, but there's nothing about it in next week's circular. Maybe the same items are on sale again?

Found a Pet Bed

Rite Aid
  • Olay Eye Roller $21.99 and two Olay moisturizers $8.99 each (one rang up with 10% discount so $8.09 and second was 50% off so $4.49), used $1 off $10 Wellness Coupon for skincare, FREE Eye Roller coupon (9/12 SS, max value $19.99, cashier took off $19.79 for some reason) and two $1 Olay moisturizer coupons (9/12 SS) and got back $10 UP Reward (WYB $30 of qualifying items) = $1.78
  • Tugaboos Diapers $0.89 ($0.99 reg price), used $1 coupon (found inside package I bought previously) = $0.11 profit
  • Pet Bed $4.99, got back $1 UP Reward = $3.99
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon, five $2 UP's and $1 UP, total was $2.87

The Olay/P&G deal is tracking your purchases from transaction to transaction. So in total, I've spent $68.44 so far. I'm planning on doing this deal twice more on this card, so that will put me around $136. Depending on what my exact total works out to be, I'll be just about halfway (if not more) towards a fifth $10 UP. I'll run the numbers at that point and work out a cheap scenario to get that last UP.

The kitties love these beds! As soon as I put it down, Gigi ran over to investigate.

Staples - had an $18 Staples Rewards expiring 9/30 that I needed to use up. I've been holding on to it, hoping for a couple freebies, but no dice so I used it on ink instead.
  • Printer Ink $22.99 - you don't even want to know how long I stood in the aisle staring at the 3.6 trillion packages of ink looking for the right one for my printer
  • Used $18 reward and paid balance on gift card from previous rebate

Using Up Some UP's

Rite Aid - my card. Was planning on picking up two pet beds at $4.99 each, but the store didn't have any so I got a raincheck instead. I'll try another store during the week so I can use up some of the UP Rewards I have that are expiring on 10/2.
  • Olay Eye Roller $21.99 and two Olay moisturizers $8.49 each (one rang up with 10% discount so $7.64 and second was 50% off so $4.24), used $1 off $10 Wellness Coupon for skincare, FREE Eye Roller coupon (9/12 SS, max value $19.99) and two $1 Olay moisturizer coupons (9/12 SS) and got back $10 UP Reward (WYB $30 of qualifying items) = $0.88

  • Used $5 off $25 coupon and six $2 UP's, total was $2.78, overall cost of transaction - $3.78 - not bad for using up so many UP's. I'm hoping another Olay rebate is posted on Olay's website soon and it will turn this into a moneymaker deal for me.

Free Printer at Office Max

If you order a Kodak ESP 5250 Printer from Office Max online, you can get back the full purchase price through their rebate program. The money will come back as Max Perks, Office Max money. I've never done a rebate through them, mostly because there are almost no Office Max stores in my area, but this is too fabulous a deal to not make you all aware of. Head on over to Sisterly Savings for all the details. The limit on this rebate is two!

Converting UP's to Cash

UPDATE - IT CLEARED! WOO!!
EDIT - just re-read the SCR booklet and the rebate is for a myGrid + Power Sleeve item. Since this is a Power Clip item, I'm not sure if its the right one. I'll let you know if it clears.

Did a quick trip to Rite Aid to convert some UP's into rebate money. The $29.99 price is the regular price and the SCR is good until 9/25, so no rush to buy this item.
  • Duracell myGrid Power Clip $26.99 ($29.99 reg price, 10% Wellness Discount)
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon, $2 UP, $4 UP, $4 UP and $10 UP, total was $3.53
  • Will get back $25 (SCR #94) = $1.47 profit
I called my sister in Virginia tonight and as I was talking to her, I was poking around in Kohl's to use a 30% coupon I got in the mail. Turns out my sister was also in Kohl's, using a 30% coupon that she got! They're also running a buy $50, get $10 Kohl's Cash deal, but I couldn't find much that I liked. I picked up this brown blazer for $24.99 - $17.49 after my coupon. I have this same blazer in another color and its so comfortable. The fabric has a bit of stretch to it, love that!

I came home to find a $10 off $10 coupon for JCPenney in the mail and a ton of rebate checks. All in all, not a bad shopping day!

How do you organize?

If you've been reading my blog for any amount of time, you've probably picked up on the fact that I love rebates. I love getting money back for items I'd buy anyway, trying new items for free and sometimes making money on rebates. There's also something about that delayed gratification that comes with waiting for your rebate check that makes it even more satisfying.
So how do I keep myself organized? Its sometimes not easy! I usually do multiple rebates, using my address, my boyfriend's address and my parents' address. That means I have to keep all my paperwork organized. One of the biggest tips I can offer you is to process everything shortly after you've shopped. Even if you just put a post-it on the receipt to remind yourself that you bought a rebate item, you have to do something to distinguish that receipt from others so you don't throw it out. I usually put all my receipts into a folder in my desk and keep them for a couple months anyway, so I don't run into that problem too often. I hang onto receipts in case I have to do a return, but this has also come in handy when I've bought a NBPR rebate for grocery items. I can just look in my receipt folder for qualifying items that I've already bought.

Anyway, getting back to the day-to-day. As I'm writing my blog posts, I usually enter my receipt info into my spreadsheet at the same time. I'll usually circle the qualifying items right away and throw them into my coverted Easter basket for processing later. I keep the basket on my desk, so I can easily look through and see what I have there. I used to do my rebates right away, but lately, I've been waiting until I have a bunch, and then I process them at the same time. This older post has my step-by-step process for processing out rebates. I'm just gonna focus on my organization today.
I've found that if I just put the receipts into the basket, I'll sometimes forget what item the rebate was for. So right away, I circle the rebate item(s) on the receipt. Sometimes receipts are really hard to decipher and I've found that if I wait, I'll totally forget what the item is and what the rebate was for.
If I'm working on a rebate item by item (ie. save $5 off $15 of produce and I'm buying fruit and veggies here and there), I'll keep all the receipts together in an envelope. If I wanna get crazy, I might even keep the rebate form in there too. I try to put post-its on the front of the envelope telling me what rebate it is, the expiration date and my progress towards the total.
I also keep all of my rebate forms together in one spot. I use this envelope for tearpad and NBPR rebates and I have a separate folder for larger or printed ones. This helps me look quickly for something.
Organization is so important in helping me save money and keeping me sane. I can't stand it when my desk is a mess.
I'd love to hear your methods for keeping everything on track!

Shopping is the Best Medicine

I was feeling absolutely miserable this morning. Fever, nauseous, pounding headache, sore throat, etc. I got up for work, got dressed and everything and was on the road when I said to myself, what the hell are you doing? Go back home! That's just what I did and collapsed back in bed for another four hours. I woke up feeling semi-human again and after having some lunch, I felt pretty ok. I wanted to go to Rite Aid to get some Mucinex to fight off the congestion, and then ended up running my other errands as well since I was out. The stores were in the same area, so I figured why not. It was a beautiful day today and the sunshine and breeze was helping my congestion. My head is still hurting a bit now, but other than that, I feel pretty ok. I'm going to head off to bed nice and early since I absolutely have to be at work tomorrow.

Rite Aid - did this on DBF's card
  • 3 Mucinex DM's $11 each, got back $7 UP Reward (WYB 2) = $26 or $8.66 each - was thinking I'd also get back a $10 UP Reward for buying $30 worth (monthly deal until 9/25) but these are the wrong size for that deal. Both my boyfriend and I use this stuff, so I don't mind burning some UP Rewards on them
  • Ginger Ale $1.25 - will use this to finish out second Coors NBPR rebate on soda. Also picked this up in case my stomach starts hurting again
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon and (get ready for it) $1 UP, $2 UP, $2 UP, $2 UP, $4 UP, $4 UP, $4 UP, $4 UP, $4 UP, total was $2.25 - paid with rewards gift card I got from a previous rebate. Cashier was a bit nervous about taking so many UP's, but after checking with her manager, she scanned them all with no problems.

Then I bought:
  • Crest 3D White Toothpaste (4 oz) $2.99, used $1 coupon (8/29 P&G), got back $1.50 UP Rewards and will get back $2 (SCR #54) = $1.51 profit (Limit 3 for the UP Reward)
  • 2 Playtex Tampons (18 ct) $4 each, used $2 coupon and $1 coupon (or 9/12 SS or June or August All You magazine) and got back two $3 UP Rewards = $1 profit *Limit is 2

I Think I'm Running out of Titles

'cause I got nuthin creative for y'all. Nuthin. Guess you'll just have to make due with a moneymaker deal. I know, life is rough sometimes.
Rite Aid - now that this deal is definitely working, I plunged in. Earlier in the week, no UP Rewards printed out, which is a pain in the rear since the store doesn't have the ability to manually print UP Rewards if there's a problem.
  • 7 Air Wick Compact I-Motions $4.99 each ($9.99 regular price, 50% off sale), used seven $4 coupons (8/29 SS) and $5 off $25 coupon, got back $10 UP Reward (WYB $30 of qualifying items)
  • Used $1 UP Reward, total was $3.03, overall profit after tax $5.97

I only had three more Air Wick coupons, so I mixed and matched with some Finish at another store.

  • 3 Air Wick Compact I-Motions $4.99 each ($9.99 regular price, 50% off sale), used three $4 coupons (8/29 SS)
  • 3 Finish Quantumatic Starter Kits $5.49 each ($10.99 regular price, 50% off sale), used three $3 coupons (or here)
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon, $1 UP Reward, $1 UP Reward, $1 UP Reward and $2 UP Reward, total was $2.29, overall profit after tax = $2.71
CVS
  • $25 DSW gift card, got back $5 EB (Limit 2) - I consider this a $5 profit since I'm converting $25 in cash to $25 in a gift card and getting back an additional $5.

The other day I went back to The Gap to return/rebuy some jeans I'd bought online. I posted about this earlier. Basically what happened was that I bought a $50 gift card for $25 through Groupon, but the store didn't have what I wanted in stock. So I bought what I wanted online, returned the jeans I didn't want (I bought 4 pairs, kept one) and rebought the one I wanted to keep in the store, using my gift card. Pretty awesome of the store, huh? You can't use the gift card online and normally, the store wouldn't let you purchase online merchandise, so I was very happy. It got even better though, the jeans were half off! The cashier very nicely offered to mark them back up to their regular price of $69.50 for me, but I said not to go to all that trouble, I'd happily take them at the sale price. So I paid $35 for them and picked up $15 worth of socks to use up my gift card.

Wipeout

So on my last ShopRite trip today, my sister and I had just checked out and were heading out of the store. We passed the other checkout aisles and before I knew it, I was walking on something slippery and down I went. I almost fell flat on my ass, but luckily, leaned forward and just fell on my knee. Ow. My first thought was, what the hell is this, oil? and my second thought was, I hope I don't get any on my purse. Funny what crosses your mind, huh? Turns out it was a gallon of water that another customer had purchased. She'd put it on the end of the aisle, where they bag groceries and it leaked all over the floor. The cashiers all stood there, looking around until my sister finally said - can you please get a manager? They mopped the water up, only after a bunch of other people had walked past and almost fallen as well. The manager took down all my info on an incident report. I'm ok, but my whole right leg from knee down to my toe is starting to throb. That floor is hard!

My sister and I had just seen Eat, Pray, Love and she jokingly said to me afterward - "I didn't know what you were doing! I thought you were knealing down to pray or something!" haha I'm glad she was there to help catch me. If she hadn't been, I definitely would have fallen flat on my back and been totally soaked. My pants are still drying out. Good times.

Anyway, here's the deal that brought me into ShopRite in the first place:
  • 2 Krusteaz Blueberry or Buttermilk Pancake Mix $1.49 each, used two $0.50 coupon (8/22 SS) and got back two $1 catalinas = $1.02 profit

Did this deal five times (gave 2 of the mixes to my sister). Bought the chips ($3.79) to use towards a $3 Budweiser NBPR rebate on $3 of chips.

Errand Day

Today was my last Friday off for the summer. We get half days on Fridays and I've been lucky enough to be able to work flex time during the week so I could have the whole day off. I love that flexibility, and it saves me on gas since I don't have to drive to work. I got a ton of stuff done today - my ShopRite shopping, one last Rite Aid trip, dropped off and picked up some new books at the library, dropped off my recycling and shipped a bunch of stuff that I sold on ebay. During the past couple of weeks, I sold:
  • 23 Secret Deodorants
  • 2 Olay Total Effects facial moisturizers
  • 4 Infusium Shampoos
  • 8 St. Ives facial cleansers
  • 2 Physician's formula mascaras
  • 7 Olay Quench lotions

The Olay and Infusium were big sellers, I got around $25 for each auction. After all the shipping costs, I now have $53 in my Paypal account. I'll use that money to pay for my coupons for the next month or so and any rebates/extra coupons I want to buy. I have some other auctions up right now as well. Selling stuff online can be a bit of work, but its definitely worth it.

Rite Aid

Seeing Red

I went to Target today.

Need I say more?
Sorry about the pic, my camera battery died after I took this first shot and realized the flash was off. Just another "sigh moment" in a long day full of them. Let's go shopping and then I'll revisit my Target experience. I'm chugging a Smirnoff as I type so if I start to not make sense, you'll know why.

First stop - CVS
  • Dawn Renewal Dish Soap $0.97, used $1 coupon (home mailer from Home Made Simple, adjusted down to $0.97) = FREE
  • 3 Wheat Thins $1 each, used three $1 coupons = FREE *Would have printed four of these coupons but my computer had a brain fart and wouldn't print another
  • Amp Energy Drinks $4.99, will submit for $5 Heineken NBPR rebate on energy drinks = FREE
  • Honey Nut Cheerios Twin Pack $7.99, got back $4 EB (Limit at least 2) = $3.99
  • Bertolli pasta sauce $3.69
  • Heinz Ketchup $1.50
  • Used $5 off $20 CRT for food purchases, $3 EB and $9.99 EB, total was $0.50

Then, off to Rite Aid. Did these two transactions at one of my usual stores that's usually really well stocked. I found the Pantene on an end cap, not with the other shampoo. The Gain was also on an end cap.

  • 6 Pantene Restoratives Beautiful Lengths Sham/Cond $4 each, used six $2 coupons (8/29 P&G) and got back $2 UP Reward for each, so $12 total = FREE *Could have used $1 off $10 Wellness coupon for haircare, but I forgot

Then I bought:

  • Bufferin (130 ct) $6.99, used $3 coupon (7/11 SS) and will get back $6 (SCR #2) = $2.01 profit
  • 5 Gain Dish Liquids $0.89 each, used five $1 coupons (8/29 P&G) = $0.55 profit *The store had tons but I saved five more coupons for the second store I was going to. Of course that store only had one bottle, figures!
  • Pantene Restoratives Beautiful Lengths Sham/Cond $4, used $2 coupon (8/29 P&G) and got back $2 UP Reward = FREE
  • Nivea for Men Body Wash $3, used $1 coupon (7/25 or 8/29 RP) and got back $2 UP Reward = FREE
  • Poland Spring 24 pack $3.99, got back $1 UP Reward = $2.99

Then at the second store, I bought:

  • Boudreaux's Butt Paste (4 oz) $3.99, used $1 coupon (8/29 SS) and $3 RA coupon = FREE/$0.01 profit
  • Tampax Tampons (20 ct) $2.99, used $1 coupon (8/29 P&G) and will get back $1 (SCR #4) = $0.99

The cashier scanned all my coupons except for my $5/$25 and then hands it back to me and says - you can save this for another time, your total is only $13. SIGH I asked her to review the coupon policy on this issue. I've had such issues at this store and I ended up calling the 1-800 number regarding this and other coupon issues. They straightened everything out and I'd been having no troubles there since that incident. The cashier ended up speaking to a manager who confirmed it was ok to use the coupon. I said thanks and mentioned that they could just scan the $5/$25 coupon and it would go through. As I'm saying this, the manager voids the entire order. SIGH

I had to pull out the Poland Spring out from the bottom of the miniature cart, all the while trying not to knock over the dude waiting behind me and also standing way too close. Then after she scanned the water and I was trying to put it back, it slipped off and moved the cart away about a foot or so. It took me a couple tries, but I got that sucker in there (I swear, I only dipped into the Smirnoff AFTER I got home). The rest of the transaction went smoothly and the manager stayed around to make sure. She mentioned that her manager had been telling everyone incorrect information about coupons and that someone had called Corporate and set her straight. I looked her dead in the eye and said, "yup, that was me" and smiled. HA! She said, "oh no, it was a guy" so I guess someone else complained too. She was very nice and inquired if I'd reached the 10% savings level yet since she sees me there so often. Truth be told, I don't shop at this particular store very often so I was surprised she remembered me.

Now, I should have called it a night after this pleasant experience and just gone home. But I had to pass a Target on my way and I wanted to pick up some travel size Tides using the $1 coupon from last Sunday's P&G. Can you guess how this all played out? I bet you can! I picked up ten and a bag of chips. I scouted out the cashiers and purposely selected a young guy. The coupon beeped, so he called over a manager who I've seen before and is the biggest coupon-hater. She starts saying how I can't use the coupon because I'm not buying the Tide pictured on the coupon, because its not good on travel sizes and because I can't buy ten of them. Come on. She called her manager, who also said no dice.

I asked for the 1-800 number so I could call Customer Service and she said she'd call instead. She then goes back to her aisle to finish checking out customers, so I pick up my stuff and coupons and go over to Customer Service, asking for the 1-800 # again. By then, the woman has come over and calls CS herself. They told her that the coupon is fine to use on this item (hoorah!) but to check if it will scan properly (boo!). If you've shopped at Target before, you know that half the coupons you use beep at the register and say "Item not found" or whatever. Its a glitch in their system and the cashiers will usually just override it. I mentioned to her that this happens all the time and she said - I've never seen that come up on the register before. Oh please! I left the store thoroughly pissed off and without buying anything.

There is just something about Target that gets under my skin sometimes. I think its because there aren't as many around. If I have an issue at CVS or Rite Aid or Walgreens, I can just go to another store. Or I can call Customer Service and they'll straighten the store out. But Target doesn't have any consistent policies and leaves so much up to each store manager's discretion that you never know what you'll be permitted to do and what you won't. Its so frustrating. And half the stuff they say doesn't even make sense. The woman from today once gave me a hard time about buying clearanced items with coupons, saying I needed to leave some on the shelf for other customers. Its CLEARANCED! Does she not know what that means? The store is trying to get rid of it! They don't care if one person comes in and clears it all out (which I didn't do by the way) or if 15 people come in and each buy one item. So short-sighted.

Anyway, thank you for listening to me rant. I'm off to finish my Smirnoff and collapse in bed. Since my expedition at Target took so long, I didn't have time to get my ShopRite shopping in tonight. So I have that to do tomorrow, along with getting a haircut (yuck), getting my oil changed (double yuck), going to the bank, going to the library and going to the post office. Fun, fun, fun! :)
