Soon

Before buying a house, I was never much interested in gardening.  But now that we've got a beautiful lawn and room to grow, flora and fauna are all that occupy my brain lately.  We have a flower garden of sorts right off the driveway that's only currently housing dirt, just ready to be seeded.  Its too early now, but soon I'm going to  try my hand (or thumb) at planting some flowers there.  I also want to plant a cherry blossom tree and a weeping willow tree in the backyard.  I keep saying Whomping Willow, a la Harry Potter though!  We've got a huge back yard with plenty of room and I've always loved willows.  We'll plant both a good distance from the house though - I know how big those willow trees can grow.  I'm also planning on putting them on the edges of the yard, not too close to our neighbors' property.  I don't want to plunk down a tree in the middle of the yard and then regret it years from now if we ever decided to put in a pool or something equally large.

With all the deer in our yard, the goal is to plant flowers that they aren't likely to eat.  My dad recommended daffodils, marigolds and zinnias.  Do you have hungry deer roaming your yard as well?  Care to share some tips?

Super Cheap Soap Refills at PC

Price Chopper - got this deal from Sheila!  I don't know what I'd do without her PC posts.  Thanks Sheila!
  • 2 Softsoap Refills (32 oz) $2.29 each, used two $0.50 coupons (3/25 SS) = $2.58
  • Colgate Toothpaste $2, used $0.75 coupon (3/25 SS) = $0.50
  • 2 Wise Ridgies Chips $3 each
  • Cape Cod Chips $3.79
  • Ruffles Chips $4.29
  • Pop Secret Popcorn $3.99
  • Used $2.50 catalina and $3.20 in bottle deposit refunds, total was $16.04
Got back a $3 catalina for buying the Softsoap and Colgate ($3 WYB $10, based on shelf prices) making those items $0.08!  Its so hard to find deals on these big soap refills, let alone getting two for $0.08.  I'll also use the chips and popcorn towards a $10 Heineken rebate on $15.01 of salty snacks.

I bought a second set of the Softsoap and Colgate - used the $3 catalina from the first transaction to pay and only had to fork over $0.51 after tax.

After shopping, we filled up my tank with gas using the $0.70/gallon discount earned at Price Chopper.  It ended up costing $3.29 a gallon.  The only downside is having to pump your own gas.  I typically get my gas in NJ and am spoiled by the attendants.  But for a $0.70 discount, I can get over my laziness.

Beautiful Collars

Lisa, one of the gals who reads my blog (Hi Lisa!) contacted me to see if I might be interested in trying out some of her beautiful, homemade dog collars.  Well, not me personally try them out, but the canine members of my family.  Surely you knew what I meant.  Surely.  Anyhoo, she makes these collars herself.  That's right, you heard me - she makes them!  The last time I used a sewing machine to hem a pair of pants, I sewed the leg shut, so I have a great deal of appreciation for those who are blessed with the sewing gene.

Check out her Etsy shop - I can't get over all the varieties and patterns to choose from!
Lisa started making collars herself after rescuing a tiny Rat Terrier puppy from some folks that left her to die.  The little gal needed surgery and was only two pounds!  After having no luck finding a harness for her, she decided to make one herself.  Now she makes collars - dog and cat, and leashes too!

Lisa donates a portion of her proceeds to rescues and charities.  She's an angel for animals for the ASPCA and donates to several local rescue groups as well.  She also recently became a foster mom for Open Arms Pound Rescue.  Her first foster "kid" was a little Yorkie who just went to his new home a couple weeks ago!  She donates a portion of the proceeds from the breast cancer and autism collars to those respective charities also.  How can you not love a woman like that?

She made a lovely collar for Riley in this green plaid print that my sister picked out.  Shadow told me she would simply settle for no print other than this black and white dot.
We typically use a choker collar on Shadow so Lisa made her a martingale collar, which is more adjustable than a typical collar would be. I can't get over how strong the material and the collar are - no way Shadow or Riley are going to rip these bad boys any time soon!
And they're so pretty!  Check out her Etsy shop today!

Happy First Day of Spring

Finished out the Aveeno deal today.  I'd bought one bottle of lotion yesterday - $4.79 after 20% discount, $5.99 reg price, and since the system rounds up, that counted as $5 worth.  So today, I bought another two -

  • Aveeno Baby Lotion $4.79 ($5.99 reg price, 20% discount), used $2 circular coupon and $1 coupon (2/26 SS) = $1.79 *Counts towards spend $15, get back $5 UP (Limit 2) promo
  • Palmer "Little Beauty" chocolate bunny $0.69 ($0.88 reg price, 20% discount)
  • Used $2 UP, totalw as $0.87
Then separately, I bought another -

  • Aveeno Baby Lotion $4.79 ($5.99 reg price, 20% discount), used $2 circular coupon and $1 coupon (2/26 SS) = $1.79 *Counts towards spend $15, get back $5 UP (Limit 2) promo
  • 2 Plastic Storage Boxes $0.80 ($1 reg price, 20% discount)
  • Used $2 UP, total was $1.04 and I got back $5 UP for the Aveeno deal
So in total, I spent $5.37 on the Aveeno lotions and got back $5 UP so $0.37 or $0.12 each.  I was going to buy another Neosporin Essentials Trial Pack but I realized last night that these are made by J&J.  I had a terrible issue with some J&J rebates a couple years ago and its made me really hesitate to do any others.  I'll probably send away for the rebate on the one I bought yesterday and call it a day.  Although, I could buy one at Walgreens and get a rebate receipt, hmm.  Something to think about.

I was looking out into our back yard the other day and spotted something yellow way in the distance.  Da boyfriend volunteered to saunter out there with the camera and low and behold, we have daffodils!

Definitely a nice surprise and very spring-ish.

Fabulous Full Freezers

Today was a bittersweet day.  My wonderful AA had the nerve to get pregnant and want to take some time off to give birth and care for her little girl.  Can you believe that?  Today was her last day in the office and tomorrow begins the long, dark, painful three month period without her.  We're all very close in the office so it definitely won't be the same without her there.  Not to mention the mountains of work she does without even blinking an eye.  She sometimes tells me that she's done everything, is there anything else that needs to be done?  (FAINT)  If I suddenly disappear and you don't see any posts from me for a week or so, please come round and dig me out from under my desk.  Anyone looking for a part-time gig?  Anyone?  Please?

To try and cheer myself up, I went back to S&S (it didn't help much).  This store had a better selection than the store yesterday, but I was still hoping for some better frozen fruit.  I got three packages of whole strawberries and one of strawberries and bananas, but that's all they had.  I would have loved some peaches.  The plan is to use the fruit for homemade ice cream and I'm not sure how the bananas are going to taste.  I may pick those out, not a huge banana-fan am I.  Here's what I got:

Stop & Shop

  • 4 Dole Frozen Fruits $3.19 each ($3.69 shelf price), used two $1 off 2 coupons (3/4 RP)
  • 4 Green Giant Steamers $1.66/7 each (three for $5, $2.59 shelf price)
  • Total was $17.43 - only got back a $5 catalina instead of $10.  Must have been one of the Green Giants - I read there were spotty problems with these.  In this order, I got broccoli with cheese sauce, natural blend and market blend.
Then I did another transaction and rolled a $10 catalina

  • 2 Green Giant Steamers $1.66/7 each (three for $5, $2.59 shelf price)
  • Breyers Ice Cream $3 ($5.29 shelf price)
  • 4 McCain Fries $2.50 each ($3.85 shelf price)
  • Used $10 catalina, total was $6.34 and got back another $10 catalina
I think I'm done for the week.  My freezer is packed jam full!

Driving with Goosebumps

It is still March right?  Someone forgot to tell Mother Nature because it was in the mid 70's here today.  What a bizarre winter this has been.  I think we had more 50 and 60 degree days than anything else.  The warm weather feels wonderful, but its not ideal for transporting frozen food.  There's a deal at Stop & Shop this week on frozen food (buy $25 worth, get back $10) but in New York, you get gas points instead of a catalina.  That meant I needed to do my shopping in NJ and haul it across the border.  I tucked my groceries on the floor of the passenger side of the car and cranked up the AC on the way home.  Everything (including me) was nice and frosty by the time we got home.  Here's what I got -

  • 4 Farm Rich Appetizers $4.99 each (shelf $6.99 each), used four $0.75 coupons (didn't double, 1/15 SS)
  • Total was $16.96 and got back $10 catalina = $6.96 or $1.74 each
Then separately, I bought:
  • Farm Rich Appetizer $4.99 (shelf $6.99), used $0.75 coupon (didn't double, 1/15 SS)
  • 4 Breyers Ice Creams $3 each (shelf $5.29)
  • Total was $16.24 and got back $10 catalina = $6.24 or $1.24 each
The deal is working based on shelf prices which makes for some pretty cheap food.  This store had a pretty terrible selection - none of the Superpretzels, Green Giant Steamers or Dole frozen fruit that I was looking for.  I'm going to try another store tomorrow and see if I have better luck.

I was too chicken to try and roll the catalina.  Has anyone done this successfully?
CVS - there's a great CVS by me that accepts expired coupons and EB's.  I had an expired $3 off $10 healthcare items CRT that I put to use today.

  • Zyrtec (5 ct) $5.99, used $3 coupon (My Allergy Guide coupon booklet) and got back $5.99 EB (Limit 1) = $3 profit
  • Pedia Care Liquid (4 oz) or Infant Drops (2 oz) $5.99, got back $5 EB (Limit 1) = $0.99
  • Used $3/$10 healthcare coupon and $1 EB, total was $4.98, overall profit $5.01
Look for these Zyrtec coupon booklets at Rite Aid.  I found these on an endcap with bottles of Zyrtec -- over by household items.  Who knows where they might be in your store.

Sick Day

Woke up feeling crummy today.  Didn't feel so hot yesterday either and DBF is sick so I knew it was just a matter of time for me.  He had a raging fever last night so neither one of us slept very well.  I crawled out of bed to call out of work and then crawled right back in.  The next thing I knew, it was 11:00!  I normally get up around 5, so sleeping that much is a sure sign that I'm fighting off something.

I sold some things on ebay and packaged them up to be shipped today, so I had to go out and drop those off.  While I was out, I swung by ShopRite to do the Purex deal but the store was out of the Ultra Packs.  I'll try another store and see if I have better luck.  I got -

  • 4 Kraft Sour Creams $1.49 each, got back $3 catalina (WYB 4 Kraft items) and a bunch of $1 off $5 SR items (produce, meat, bake shoppe, seafood and deli) = $2.96 or $0.74 each
  • 4 Viva Paper Towels $1.99 (reg price), used four $0.85 coupons (3/11 SS) = $0.29 each
  • $25 Lowes Gift card, got back $5 catalina = $5 profit
  • Used $5 Munch Mania catalina (on Kraft sour cream), total was $27.49
Bought a second Lowes gift card separately.  I love these promos!  We'll always use the gift cards so I just tuck them away, and its a great way to get catalinas that I can use for food.  I'm up to $30 in free money so far.

Here's the Purex deal - buy six Purex laundry detergents (bottles or Ultra Packs) for $1.99 each, use six four $0.75 coupons or $1 coupons (3/11 RP) and get back a $5 catalina.  Depending on the coupons you use, its either super cheap or free.  For the $0.75 coupon, you have to fill out the requested info, then select that you want the Ultra Packs as a sample instead of the detergent.  On the next page, you'll have the option of printing a coupon instead of getting a sample in the mail.

Great Gift Card Deal

ShopRite

  • Golden Delicious Apples $1.29/lb = $3.88
  • Lowes $25 gift card, got back $5 catalina = $5 profit
  • Total was $28.88
Bought three additional $25 Lowes cards - $20 profit in total.  The deal also works on Lane Bryant, Marriott and Visa gift cards.

CVS - picked up six papers and paid with EB's and a gift card

Walgreens

  • 4 Right Guard Total Defense 5 Body Wash $4.49 each, BOGO sale, used two $3 off 2 coupons (printable, no longer available) and got back $4 RR (WYB 4) = $1.02 profit
  • 10 Kleenex Tissues (100 ct) $0.99, used nine $1 coupons (bought these on ebay, they're from a Spanish paper) = $0.90 or $0.09 each
  • 16 Scotch Bubble Mailers $0.39 each
  • Total was $12.16
Walgreens registers beep when you use a coupon that's higher than the value of the item (ie. $1 coupon on $0.99 item).  But if you buy multiple items and use one less coupon, you're still paying and the registers are happy = no beeps.  I went to another store after this and used up the rest of my coupons.
