What's Red, Shiny and Clean?

My new car, that's what!
This morning I was here...
And now I'm here, what a difference! My new car has all sorts of fancy features, like this awesome button marked AC. Guess what happens when you press it? Cold air comes blowing out of the vents! What a wonderful surprise! And if you play a CD and press the eject button, the CD actually comes out of the CD player. I know, I know! And to top it all off, when you are done driving and want to exit your vehicle, you only have to press the seat belt button once to release the belt. No wiggling the button, pushing it down from a different angle or yanking on the belt required. Cars these days, fancy shmancy I tell you.

With 140,000+ miles on my last car and some looming (and expensive) car repairs on the horizon, I decided it was time for a new set of wheels. DBF and I went car shopping over the weekend and I test drove a Nissan Sentra and a Toyota Corolla. The Nissan was surprisingly roomy and I loved the way it drove, but the price just wasn't right. I felt like I was going to hit my head on the roof of the Corolla and wasn't crazy about the way it drove, so I decided to go for Honda Civic #2. I got the same model that I had before, but its got a couple of new perks that I love. Its got automatic up as well as automatic down on the driver side window, a USB port for my iPod and I can set the volume on the speakers to adjust up or down depending on how fast I'm going. And you gotta love the color!
I went for a five year loan at 1.9%, so my payments are around $240 a month. I'll have to increase the insurance coverage since I'm financing the car, but the difference isn't all that much. When I paid off my previous car last year, I moved that amount of money into savings each month, so I don't have to juggle anything to be able to make the car payments. It was really nice to have no car payments, but it didn't make sense to keep throwing money into my car and there was no way I was going through a hot, muggy NJ summer without air conditioning. Its April 6 and its 75 degrees here already!

I did squeeze in some shopping today too:

Rite Aid

  • Crest Pro Health Toothpaste (4.2 oz) $2.29, use $1.50 coupon (3/21 RP) and get back $1.50 (SCR) = $0.71 profit
  • Gillette Fusion Power or Manual Razor $8, use $4 coupon (4/4 P&G) and get back $4 (SCR #43) = FREE
  • Drano Max $5.99 - there's a satisfaction guarantee on this if it doesn't work well
  • 2 Rite Aid freezer bags $2.99 each, BOGO sale = $1.49 each
  • 3 Musketeers Raspberry flavored $2.19 - 50% off clearance price, DBF and I have been looking for these for a couple weeks so I had to snag a bag when I saw them in the store. Forgot to put them in the pic
  • Used $5 off $20 coupon, total was $10.68

Kmart - went here after picking up my car. I couldn't wait to get back in and drive around some more, so of course this took foreeeeevvvvvveeeeeerrrrrrr!

  • Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Mascara Duo $10.49, used $4 peelie coupon and will submit for Try Me Free rebate = $4 profit
  • 4 Tidy Cats Breeze litter pads $5.29 each (these were marked $4.99 in the aisle, grr), used four $1 coupons - doubled to $2 each (2/7 RP) = $3.29 each
  • Tidy Cats Breeze litter pellets $6.99, used $1 coupon - doubled to $2 (2/7 RP) = $4.99
  • 2 Wylers drink mixes $1 each - got these thinking my total would be too low to use both gift cards, but it turns out I didn't need them
  • Used two $10 gift cards (from Hershey's promo), total was $8.99

This was new - I had to sign up for a Kmart rewards card to get the coupons to double. Of course I didn't realize this until we were halfway through my transaction. Since Kmart is incapable of having more than two registers open at once, the huge line of people behind me glared as the cashier had to void the order, sign me up for the stupid card and rering everything. Ugh! At least I used up both gift cards and don't have to go back to Kmart any time soon.

Moneymaking Candy

Kmart - was chatting with the nicest lady in line today. As we were waiting, a cashier came over to me and told me to go to her line (she was just opening her register) but the lady behind me scooted over and cut me off. I sighed and stayed where I was. The woman who was then behind me sighed too and said - well, wasn't that nice? Another register was open to the right of us with an elderly woman ringing people up. She said - you should go over to that line. I said, that's ok, why don't you go? She says (quietly) - I have to pay with a check and I'm afraid I'll confuse her! (the cashier was struggling to ring up her current customer) I told her that I was afraid my coupons might put her into a tizzy and I was afraid to go to her line also. haha Saw this deal on Queen's blog
  • 4 Hershey's Pieces candies (found near register in a special display, not with the candy) $2 each, used three $1 coupons (1/31 SS) = $7.70 total
  • Register printed a rebate form for a "$10 Kmart gift card towards the purchase of Hershey's" (strange huh?) = $2.30 profit

Repeated to do rebate under DBF's address, although the rebate says its a limit of 4 per address. Just looks like you have to send each form in separately. Rebate is good until 2/6.

Walgreens

  • Bayer Contour Blood Glucose Meter $14.99, used freebie coupon (10/25 RP) and got back $10 RR = $10 profit (then bought another one separately)

Finally used up a $5 raincheck I've had since last April. It was unusual for the manager to give me this, so other stores have been reluctant to take it and I rarely go to this particular store.

  • 5 x 7 picture frame - clearanced to $6.59, $1.59 after the raincheck and $1.70 with tax
I've still been doing a lot of Kohl's shopping, using up the 20 $5 coupons I bought on ebay. I also got a 15% coupon in my email today, and you can use that along with the $5 coupon! When I got to the store today, I was so psyched to see that they're running a promo on top of all that - spend $50, get back $10 Kohl's cash. It was like the perfect storm of Kohl's coupons. I picked up these pants (my fav brand) for $29.99 and this cute top for $24.99 and headed over to the registers. Unfortunately, the 15% coupon is valid starting tomorrow (duh!) so I wasn't able to use it. My total was $49.98 and I got back the $10 cash - that's valid starting 2/7. I'll make some more trips tomorrow and Saturday to use up my coupons (they expire 2/6).

Keep your Fingers Crossed for Me

Kmart - wanted to get some of the free St. Ives that I saw on Queen's blog
  • 7 St. Ives Elements cleansers/scrubs $3.49 each (marked $6.99 but are actually on sale), used seven $2 coupons (doubled to $3.49 each, 3/8 SS) = FREE
  • Rubbermaid laundry basket $9.44 - really needed, mine are all cracked and broken
  • 2 Pillows - $7.99 each, really needed these too, mine are super old
  • 3 Tidy Cats Breeze litter $5.99 each
  • Tidy Cats Breeze litter pads $3.99, used $1 coupon (doubled to $2, WYB litter and pads, home mailer or inside package -- can't remember)
  • Diet Coke for DBF $1.49
  • Total was $51.20

I needed some new pillows and I picked up one thinking it would be good to have an extra item in case the St. Ives coupons gave overage. Then I started thinking, well, I really need two pillows so maybe I'll get another one and some other stuff to try for the rebate below. I haven't had the best of luck with Glamour rebates in the past, but even if it doesn't come, the laundry basket, pillows and litter are all things I need anyway. Fingers crossed!

We went to the vet to pick up some more food for Mr. Mousse and they had stapled forms to the bags. They explained to me that there was a $5 rebate available until 3/31 for these - sounds good to me! They gave me two separate receipts, so I'll submit for one at my address and one at DBF's address. At $16.79 a bag, I'll take any discount I can get on this stuff!

Weekend of Hounding!

Its been the dreaded triple H this weekend - hazy, hot and humid. With temps reaching into the mid 90's and crazy humidity, it wasn't fun getting in and out of the car to go hounding - but I wasn't about to let that stop me! DBF and I were sticky all weekend, but look at all we've got to show for it! Here we go:

Target
  • 2 All trial size detergents $1 each - used $1 All coupons here = FREE
  • Total was $0.14

Kmart (went in for the BOGO Max Factor sale...and the store didn't have any Max Factor at all! Not even a spot for it in the makeup aisle! Grr)

  • Tidy Cats litter pellets $5.59
  • Tidy Cats litter pads $3.69
  • Used two $2 coupons I printed from coupons.com ages ago (they aren't there anymore unfortunately)
  • Total was $5.93 with tax
  • I LOVE this litter box by the way! With 2 cats, there used to be tracked litter all over my apartment. Not anymore! Love it!

A&P - triple coupons this week!

  • 3 Viva paper towel rolls $2.29 each - used $0.75 coupons (4/27 SS) = $0.04 each
  • 2 Sunsweet dried fruits (yum!) $2.99 each - used $0.75 coupons (5/18 SS) = $0.74 each
  • 4 Lysol Healthy Touch Gentle foam $0.99 each (had a raincheck from last month) - used 3 $0.75 coupons (4/13 SS) and 1 $1 coupon (5/18 SS) = -$3.79 overage
  • Total was -$2.04 so I picked up 2 packs of gum at $1.19 each = $0.51

Found Mentos Gum at another A&P - marked as $1.19 (rang up as $1.49) so with the $0.55 coupons (5/18 SS) they were -$0.46 each. Noticed when I got home the second transaction with 1 gum that the coupon only doubled, not tripled. Oh well, it was still a steal.

Walgreens

  • 2 packs Walgreens water for DBF's mom - 2 for $5 with in-circular coupon
  • 2 bags WAG shredded cheeses $2.59 each
  • Milk $2.19
  • 1 paper $1
  • Total was $13.37 - paid with rebate gift card

CVS

  • 4 packs Diet Coke for DBF (this is all he drinks - I swear!) 4 for $11
  • 3 papers $2 each
  • Used $4.69 ECB, $5 ECB and $6 ECB
  • Total was $1.31 and got back $3 ECB for Coke

  • 5 Breakstone Cottage Doubles $1 each
  • Coupons used: $1 off 3 Breakstones coupon (5/18 SS) and $0.05 bag discount
