Nothing's Ever Easy at RA

Rite Aid - stole the Aveeno deal from Sheila - thanks for the idea!

  • Arm & Hammer Crystal Burst Laundry Detergent Capsules $5.59 ($6.99 reg price, 20% discount), will send away for TMF rebate (peelie found on package) = FREE
  • Stopain Analgesic Spray or Roll On $6, will get back $6 (SCR #22) =FREE
  • 2 Robitussins $5.19 each ($6.49 reg price, 20% discount), used two $3 circular coupons and two $1 coupons (or here or 1/1 or 1/29 RP) = $2.38
  • 3 Aveeno Positively Radiant Cleansing Pads (28 ct) and one Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Daily Scrub $7.99 each, BOGO 50% off sale so two were $3.99 each, used four $2 coupons (1/8 SS), got back $5 UP for spending $15 on Aveeno (weekly deal) and once I buy one more ($6.39 with 20% discount - $2 coupon), I'll get back a $10 UP for spending $25 on skincare items (monthly deal) = $5.35 or $1.07 each
  • 2 Starburst Jelly Beans $2.39 each ($2.99 reg price, 20% discount), got back $1 UP (WYB 2) = $3.78 or $1.89 each
  • Used $10 UP and $20 UP, total was $8.71
Yesterday I bought 12 Robitussins at $5.19 a piece = $62.28.  Since the $10 UP is printing for every $25 spent and not $30 as I'd thought, I purchased a couple too many.  I crunched the numbers today and found that I'd make a profit if I bought three more Robitussins to get me to the $75 threshold.  Imagine my surprise when the $10 UP printed today after only two bottles!  Well, I just realized why that happened.  The cashier rang up three bottles when I'd only purchased two.  Sigh.  Not quite the plan I'd had in mind, but in total, I spent $19.85 and got back $30 in UP's so I still made a $10.15 profit.

As Usual...

Rite Aid has me completely bewildered as to what just happened.  I do love their sales, but they don't make things easy, do they?

So, here's what happened.  Over the course of the day, I went to a bunch of different stores and picked up twelve bottles of Robitussin.  They were $6.49 regular price, so $5.19 with my 20% discount.  I used a $3 circular coupon and $2 or $1 manufacturer's coupon on each ($2 was a printable from coupons.com, $1 coupon or here or 1/1 or 1/29 RP).  All in all, I paid $12.28.  I should have received two $10 UP's from this week's promo ($10 when you spend $30, Limit 4).  I did receive two $10 UP's, but they're from this monthly deal ($10 when you spend $25, Limit 4).  So I still made a profit - $7.72, but it should have been $27.72.  I'll also send away for three $10 rebates WYB three qualifying items including Robitussin (1/29 RP) which turns this deal into a $37.72 or $57.72 profit, depending on what happens with my missing UP's.  I think I'm going to give it a day or so and see if the UP's print when I make another purchase.  If not, I'll probably contact Customer Service about it.  Did this happen to any of you as well?

Among my many trips, I also picked up:

  • 2 Pantene Ice Shine/Aqua Light Sham/Cond $3.50 each, used $3 off 2 coupon (2/26 SS) and got back $2 UP's ($2 WYB 2, Limit 2 offers, weekly deal) and two $1 UP's (monthly deal, Limit 3) = FREE (did this again on a separate card)
  • x 2 - Blink Gel Tears (10 mL) $7.99, used $1 coupon (this beeped) and will get back $7.99 (SCR #12) = $1 profit
  • Stopain Analgesic Spray or Roll On $6, will get back $6 (SCR #22) =FREE
I'm very glad I was able to get all of my Robitussin purchases done today.  Purchases for the 1/29 RP rebate have to be made by 2/29, so if you're going to do this deal, get going!  The rebate form is a bit misleading.  It says on the top that it expires on 3/30, but then says further down that purchases have to be made by 2/29.  I guess you have until 3/30 to get the form to them.

I also headed over to two CVS's -

Glitch Day

Check out the new Carrie Underwood song!  I just love her!

UPDATE - the Huggies wipes are no longer printing RR's.

Walgreens - first time I've set foot into Walgreens since December.  I really wanted to pick up some cheap razors for DBF.  Deals on razors have become so scarce that when I see a great deal, I am definitely stocking up.  With the profit from the Renew, they work out to be free.  The $3 coupon is no longer available but I have a copy that I'm happy to send to anyone who needs it.  Email me dear friends.

  • Renew Life Ultimate Flora Daily Care (30 cps) $10, used $3 coupon (no longer available) and got back $10 RR = $3 profit
Buyer beware - the Renew rang up for me as $24.99 in three different stores today.  Keep an eye on it and don't be afraid to ask the cashier to modify the price to $10.  Then I used that $10 RR to buy:
  • Baby Magic Dustless Baby Powder (0.28 oz) $6, send away for $6 rebate = FREE *If get money back on a Walgreens gift card, you get a 10% bonus = $0.60 profit
  • Huggies Wipes $2.49, used $0.50 coupon (2/12 SS) and got back $2 RR = FREE/$0.01 profit
  • W Men's 5 Blade Razor $3.99, got back $3 RR = $0.99
  • Used $10 RR, total was $2.68
Then I used the RR's just earned to get more Renew -

  • Renew Life Ultimate Flora Daily Care (30 cps) $10, used $3 coupon (no longer available) and got back $10 RR = $3 profit
  • 2 Tuf Paper Towels $0.69 each with in-circular coupon
  • Used $2 RR and $3 RR, total was $3.38

Then bought another Huggies, razor and baby powder.  Rolled that back into Renew again (plus three bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide that we needed) and finally back into a third set of Huggies, razor and baby powder.  The baby powder rebate is limit one so I'll send away for one at home, one at my parent's and one at DBF's mom's house.

Don't know how long the Huggies deal will work, so if you want some, better get out there.  The following varieties are confirmed to be working: Natural Care unscented, Soft Skin and Sensitive.

Rite Aid - today I tackled the Pantene and tomorrow is Robitussin day.  I wanted to buy these on their own so I can use them towards the $15 P&G rebate WYB $50 of certain items including Pantene (Exp. 4/28).  I've spent $21 so far but it was all in "almost" free items!  Love that

  • 2 Pantene Ice Shine/Aqua Light Sham/Cond $3.50 each, used $3 off 2 coupon (2/26 SS) and got back $2 UP's ($2 WYB 2, Limit 2 offers, weekly deal) and two $1 UP's (mystery deal) = FREE
  • Total was $4.57

Then at another store, I got -

  • 4 Pantene Ice Shine/Aqua Light Sham/Cond $3.50 each, used two $3 off 2 coupons (2/26 SS) and got back two $2 UP's ($2 WYB 2, Limit 2 offers, weekly deal) and three* $1 UP's (mystery deal) = $1 or $0.25 each
  • Sally Hansen Quick Color Fast Dry Nail Polish Pen $2.07 - 75% clearance down from $8.29.  I've been wanting to try these for a while so I splurged.  I really like it!
  • Used $2 UP and two $1 UP's from first transaction, total was $7.38
*I had another two bottles to buy at this store so the cashier knew I was rolling my rewards.  I slyly handed her another card, she rang up my two bottles and scanned a $2 UP and two $1 UP's from my receipt, ripped them off and handed me back the rest.  Now that I'm looking at it, I got back a $2 UP and only ONE $1 UP.  So I'm not sure if she ripped off one too many UP's or if I only got back three $1 UP's.  Looking through some other folks posts on SD, it looks like you may only get back three $1 UP's when you buy four bottles. Still not a bad deal.

Finally (this was on a separate card from either transaction above)

  • 2 Pantene Ice Shine/Aqua Light Sham/Cond $3.50 each, used $3 off 2 coupon (2/26 SS) and got back $2 UP's ($2 WYB 2, Limit 2 offers, weekly deal) and two $1 UP's (mystery deal) = FREE
  • Used $2 UP and two $1 UP's, total was $0.57

My New Favorite Thing

I broke down and bought a Kindle Fire.  Spending money on things I want usually gives me a guilty pang.  I don't have a smart phone, I doubt I'd have an iPod if it wasn't given to me as a gift and I went months without a computer last year when mine died.  Living frugally has become a way of life, but sometimes, it feels so damn good to splurge.  I bought this beauty at Staples this morning for $199, used a couple of Staples Rewards and will get back a $25 Staples gift card via rebate.  I absolutely love it!  If it was just an eReader, I probably would have passed but I can use it to go online, watch tv shows/movies, play games, etc.  Sort of a mini iPad, but much cheaper.  I spent the better part of the afternoon fiddling around with it, trying to decide which books I want to download.  My local library has free ebooks, so I have lots of options.  I downloaded a couple of samples and I can't believe the clarity of the screen.  Love it!
I made Melanie's Pepperoni Pull Bread for dinner and man was it good!  I don't have a bundt pan, so I just smushed the lovely bits of dough into a baking pan, brushed with extra virgin olive oil mixed with some garlic powder and Italian seasoning and popped into the oven.  It took about 40 minutes to cook and was worth the wait.  The next time I make this (and there will be a next time), I'm going to use more cheese.  I used one bag of shredded mozzarella and between the two balls of dough, it wasn't quite enough.  Laid out in the pan like this, it reminds me of monkey bread, Italian style!

On This Episode of This Old House...

Shadow is very proud of the renovations she supervised this weekend and can't wait to share them with you.  She loves having such a handy dad who knows how to fix just about anything (and takes direction well).
"Would you look at this paneling humans?  Who would do this to an otherwise beautiful hallway?"
"Blech, this has to go.  HUMAN!  REMOVE THE PANELING!"
"Lift with both paws human servant. We don't want you damaging those hands.  We need petting and feeding you know.  I will demonstrate the proper lifting technique for you."
(muffled)  Is this good?
"Yes, just like that human.  Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take a nap.  All this supervising is exhausting."

The finished product!  Its amazing how much brighter and larger the hallway appears now.  Once the weather warms up and we can open some windows to ventilate, we're going to paint the hallway and replace the moulding.  I'd also like to paint the bedroom.  We held off when we first moved in because we were thinking we'd bump out a wall and expand the bedroom, but now that we're living in the space, we've decided against it.
Now on to project #2!  This has been ongoing for quite a while.  The house came with this wood stove installed into the fireplace.  The previous owners assured us that it worked quite well and kicked out a great deal of heat.  I'm sure it did, but neither of us could stand the sight of it.  It also stuck out into the living room and took up a great deal of space.  We knew we wanted it gone, but the question was - how do we get rid of it?  It easily weighed 400-500 pounds.
We stewed on the issue for several months and wondered what the fireplace behind the stove looked like.  DBF pulled off the heat shield to reveal some pretty yellow brick.  Encouraged, we worked on other projects until one of DBF's friends said he'd come up and haul it away for us.  He arrived with three friends in tow and a case of beer.  Fortunately, he'd brought reinforcements and a van!  Unfortunately, they'd all had one too many beers before arriving at our house (don't worry, one of the reinforcement's wives came along as their driver).  After much pondering, cursing, lifting, shoving, and pushing, the men managed to get the stove out of our living room, through the dining room and right in front of our sliding glass doors.  (I imagine this process would have gone slightly smoother had they been drinking cokes instead of beers)  One of the men hopped in the van, drove it up our yard and backed it up to the sliders.  DBF was leaning out the slider at this point (as was another guy on the other side) and after a very tense moment when the driver forgot which pedal was the brake and came THIS CLOSE to squishing my hunny against the house (AUGH!), the van was in position. Another episode of cursing and grunting followed, and then the stove was finally out of the house!
After ripping off the paneling above the fireplace, we finally saw what we had to work with.  The black swirls are the remains of the adhesive used to put up the old paneling.  Unfortunately, the wall was in pretty bad shape, too bad to just paint over so we decided to put up new paneling to cover it.
The fireplace also needed quite a bit of scrubbing.  Yuck.
TA DA!  DBF put up this lovely paneling, framed out the corners and even built a mantel!  I love this man so very much.  :)  The plan is to hang a picture or large mirror above the fireplace.  We just have to find the perfect one.  The windows face this wall, so I think having a mirror here would be pretty.
He rounded out the edges of the mantel so it looks smooth and polished.
I picked up this fireplace screen at Target for under $30.  I love the pattern.  And see how the paneling blends in with the tan color we painted the living room walls?  That was a happy accident.  This paneling was our favorite (and the cheapest) that the store had, and luckily, everything coordinated nicely.

We were toying around with some options and first had some flameless candles inside the fireplace.  That didn't look quite right, so -
- we moved the candles to the mantel instead and put in an electric heater inside the fireplace.  Neither of us is crazy about the idea of having an actual fire in our house, so this is a great substitute.  It functions as a space heater too and is really warm.  When it got dark this evening, having this going made the living room so cozy.  I just love our house!
Another happy thing I love about our house is that we're really close to a Thomas/Entenmann's outlet.  We got all this - three loaves of country white bread, three bagels and three pastries for just $12!
I also made a trip to Staples to convert some Staples Rewards money into cash via Easy Rebates.  Here's what I bought:

  • 2 Staples 8.5" x 11" Copy Paper (500 sheet ream) $3.79 each (these were supposed to be $5.49 each according to the circular, cashier verified these are the right ones for the rebate so we'll see what happens), will get back ? as Easy Rebate (Limit 2) = should be FREE
  • 2 Staedler Maxum Ballpoint Pens (extra bold, assorted colors) $5.99 each, will get back $5.99 each via Easy Rebate (Limit 2) = FREE
  • 2 Kleenex double packs $2.99 each, will get back $2.99 each via Easy Rebate (Limit 2) = FREE
  • Reusable Bag $1.49
  • Used $10 reward and $17.03 of an $18 reward (very surprised to see this covered the tax - thought for sure it would beep and I'd have to get another bag), total was zero

These deals are only valid today (Sunday) and Monday.

Hounding the Day Away

Price Chopper

  • 4 Softsoap Soap Dispensers $1 each, used four $0.40 coupons (1/29 SS) = $2.40 or $0.60 each
  • 2 TruMoo Chocolate Milks $2 each, used two $0.55 coupons (2/12 SS) = $2.90 or $1.45 each
  • 4 Francesco Rinaldi Sauces $1 each
  • 2 PC Sugars $2 each
  • Total was $13.63
Expected the TruMoo and Softsoap coupons to double but they didn't.  Bummer!
Rite Aid - spent all but one $15 UP.  At the first store I went to, the $15 UP's only scanned as $7.50 off.  Although I'm not terribly surprised, I can't believe RA would do this. There's no way for the register to know if the $15 UP being used was part of the glitch or not.  Sometimes I'm amazed RA is still in business with some of the stunts they pull.  The cashier at the first store took off $15 for each UP with no problems.  The second store sometimes gives me issues with coupons, but luckily, the UP's wouldn't scan at all so they manually entered them in as $15 off.  Here's what I got:

  • 4 Ruffles Chips and 1 Doritos $3.43 each ($4.29 reg price, 20% discount), used two $1 off 2 tearpad coupons for the Ruffles and use these towards a $10 rebate on salty snacks (WYB $15, Heineken HKNNA027 or Newcastle NBANA006)
  • 2 Clorox Cleaners $2.63 each ($3.29 reg price, 20% discount) and will get back $1 (SCR #37, WYB 2)

  • 3 Snickers bars $0.99 each, B2G1 FREE
  • 4 RA Cotton Swabs $2.39 each ($2.99 reg price, 20% discount), got back two $1 UP's ($1 UP WYB 2)
  • RA Cotton Balls $1.99 ($2.59 reg price, 20% discount)
  • Spent $14.87 cash all in all ($6.13 was tax)
I feel a bit relieved to have spent most of my UP's.  I've got a $15 UP and a $20 UP for next week, plus a couple $1 ones.  Why is it that when I'm trying to not spend money in a store, my total keeps creeping up.  But when I'm trying to find things to buy, nothing looks good.  It took me forever to decide on all this stuff!
CVS

  • 2 Colgate Total Toothpastes (4-4.2 oz) $2.75 each, used two $0.75 coupons (2/12 SS) and got back $4 EB ($2 each, Limit 2) = FREE

Got back $1 EB for using my green bag tag!

  • 4 Kraft Parmesan Cheeses $1 (aren't these cute?), used four $1 coupons (2/12 SS) = FREE

  • 8 Italian Village Raviolis $0.77 each
  • 4 SR frozen veggies $0.88 each
  • 3 SR Taylor Hams $5
  • 4 Tyson Chicken Nuggets $4.24 each, used four $0.75 coupons (2/12 SS) = $2.74 each
  • Total was $39.01
Tried to pay using a $10 catalina I'd earned earlier in the week on the Sobe/Lipton but it beeped and said I'd exceeded the quantity allowed for this item.  I used a different SR card to buy these than when I'd bought the first set.

Finally Venturing Somewhere Other Than RA

Rite Aid - I bought the glasses on DBF's card hoping that I'd still get back UP's on them and the $20 Buy & Save promo. It worked! I bought glasses on this card earlier in the week (three at a time) and the UP's still printed.

Got back $20 UP for Buy & Save promo for spending $100 on qualifying items.  I'm trying to spend up these $15 UP's and leave myself with one $20 UP to roll into next week's deals.  I'm paranoid that RA is going to change the value of these UP's so when you try to redeem them, they won't scan at full value.

Semi-Dead Deal

Rite Aid - between the time that I bought these glasses (around 1 pm) and now, the deal died at RA.  It was printing one $15 UP for each pair of glasses bought, so when buying four, you'd get back $60 in UP's for about a $30 profit.  I'm glad I was able to get some before they killed the deal.  Its now back to printing two $15 UP's when you buy three glasses.  Still a moneymaker!  You can buy three, three, three and then two glasses.  You'll get back two $15 UP's for the first three transactions and then one $15 UP for the fourth.  Be sure to wait 24 hours between each transaction though.  So confusing, but worth it.

Now I'm going to focus on spending down all the UP's I've earned, using them on things we need around the house.  Here are some of the things I've bought already:
RA Apple Juice $2
Hartz Crunch 'n Clean Dog Treats $3.99 ($4.99 reg price, 20% discount), used $0.50 peelie coupon
RA Cotton Balls $1.50 each
RA Cotton Swabs $2.50 each, $1 UP when you buy 2
I also picked up the plastic box for $1.

Any good plans for spending your UP's?
Lots of glasses to donate!
