99 Duh-grees

That's what my car temperature read today. Not when I first got in the car after it had been baking in the sun all day, after I'd been on the highway for a good 15 minutes and the car was cool. 99! That is just too hot for this frugalista. I am not a summer person. Not by any stretch of the imagination. I hate being hot, I hate being sticky, I hate being sweaty. Ten minutes in the sun and I've got a sunburn brewing somewhere. I'm happiest cozied up under several layers, with a cold breeze blowing on my face. So you can imagine that I wasn't the happiest of campers today. Add to that the allergy attack I'm fighting. I took a half day yesterday and when I walked out into the hot, humid 90+ weather and it felt good, I KNEW I was sick.

I've also been fighting an army of miniature ants that have invaded my kitchen. Gigi's no help, she just sits at the edge of the kitchen and watches them stroll around. I always hesitate to put out any kind of bug spray with her around, so I've been splashing vinegar on the baseboards where I've seen them coming in. Stupid dolts just walk in it and drown, leaving miniature ant carcasses all over the place. That marks the way for the slightly brighter ones, who avoid the vinegar spots and brazenly continue their march across my floor. My weapon of attack has been the vacuum, but they've started to run away when they hear it come on. Today I had it. I ate dinner, then marched my ass back out in the oppressive heat (a sticky 85 degrees by then) and got myself to CVS. I needed to go anyway because I was totally out of soda.
CVS
  • 2 Excedrin PM (8 ct) $0.99 each, used $2 Excedrin CRT and got back $1.98 EB ($0.99 each, Limit 2) = $2 profit
  • Raid Ant Traps $4.99
  • 4 Diet Coke cases $3.25 each, got back $3 EB (WYB 4, Limit 1) = $10 or $2.50 each
  • Used $1 EB, $1 EB, $5 EB and $10 EB, total was $1.85
I also had to pick up a prescription (which took forever even though it had been called in) so I was hoping to get the coupon for a free $5 gift card when you meet with a Pharmacist but no dice.

Then since I was out anyway, I headed over to Rite Aid to go raincheck shopping - jackpot! They were out of the John Frieda Full Repair Root Lifting Foam so I got a raincheck for four at $4.99 each. I'll get these some time during the month to take advantage of the $5 SCR on them (Limit 2 - I'll use these rainchecks for two SCR accounts).
  • 2 Dial Hand Soaps $2.29 each, BOGO sale and got back $2 UP (WYB 2, Limit 1) = $0.29 for two
  • Total with tax was $2.45
I bought these more for the dispensers than the actual soap. All of mine have gotten really crummy and gross.

To get rid of or keep ants out, use some flour. You only need a thin line of flour near wherever they are entering. Ants will never cross a line of flour. HTH

It was 99 in my car today too...not fun! I had the ants a few weeks ago. They were awful. I tried the vinegar and 2 different ant traps and couldn't get rid of them. Finally, I bought Orkin Home Defense Ant Traps. They were only 1.89 for a 3 pk at the hardware store and that seemed to do the trick. I've still had a few, but nothing like it was! Gross!

I put out those little disks filled with ant bait. The cats can't get into them to eat the bait, and the ants must not be carrying enough around to have any effect on the cats.

And the cats are pretty happy to no longer have ants in their bowls. Disclaimer: I am not a veterinarian.

Pubbler,
I heard the same thing about salt and had a salt line in my kitchen. But the ants just walked up the cabinets, around the line and back down to the floor! Pesky little buggers

Connie,
Thanks, I'll keep those in mind if the Raid ones don't work. They seem a little better today, and hopefully they'll be gone in a couple days.

seasonofplenty,
I'm sure Gigi will be happy when she can eat in the kitchen again! I've been feeding her in another room. The ants were all over her food when I first found them.

Sunny Simple Life,
What's simple green? Is that a spray?

Cornmeal. Ants can't digest it so they die. If they take it back to the hive it will kill off even more.

104 degree in my car yesterday! I dont mind the heat though because whenever it does cool down even a little, we get severe storms. I'd rather be hot than cowaring in the basement! I've been battling ants too. Ant traps never work for me, sprays at least work for a couple days.
