After some hunting, I was able to find a RA with enough Alka Seltzer in stock for me to do this deal. She's Old, but She'll Hold

"Are you callin' me old momma? I don't think I like that."

Nope, not my Gigi, but my computer is definitely showing her age. I got a nasty virus earlier this week and despite my best efforts, getting rid of it was beyond me. I couldn't even get to my start menu! I unplugged the old gal and carted her off to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. Luckily they were able to get rid of the bug and now I don't have to look at this sad, empty desk anymore (eww - look at that dust!). Its amazing how much I rely on this computer. Between emails, blogging, tracking my expenses, photos, music and everything else, my life is on this thing! I bought it refurbished in 2004 and its still plugging along pretty well.
Now on to the fun stuff...shopping! My Mad Coupons order arrived today so tomorrow's mission is to hunt down some Alka Seltzer at RA. Wish me luck!

Walgreens - used up my last five Contac coupons for a $10 profit. Now I have to figure out something to use all these RR's on. I bought each box separately and here's the breakdown:
  • Contac Cold + Flu (28 ct) $6, used $2 coupon (10/10 RP) and got back $6 RR = $2 profit

Rite Aid - for some reason, I only got back 21 $1 UP's, instead of the 26 I was expecting. I'm not sure which of the items I bought didn't give me the UP's though. Anyone have an idea? UPDATE - it was the $0.99 nail polishes that messed me up. Only $1.99 and up items are producing the UP Rewards, so be careful about which ones you pick up. Thanks SaveinLA!

  • 13 NYC Cosmetics (Eye, Face or Lip) $1.99 each, used four $1 off 2 coupons and BOGO coupon (Oct. All You magazine)
  • 13 NYC Nail Polishes $0.99-$1.99, all FREE with BOGO sale running this week
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon, total was $16.34, overall profit $4.66

I was a little nervous buying just the NYC items, knowing my receipt was going to be half a mile long when it printed out. Luckily, I had an awesome cashier that was cheering the register on as it kept printing, and printing, and printing. She actually went through it and counted up all the UP's I got. :)

Just for fun, I think its time for some random kitty shots! I snapped this one of Gigi a while back. She was lying Superwoman-style and I loved the way she stuck out her feet to either side.
Da boyfriend made this kitty toy out of cotton balls stuffed into a sock and then thoroughly sprayed with catnip spray. Its been a huge hit and Mousse sometimes uses it as a pillow.

Yup, he definitely likes it!
I have literally about 30 pictures of Gigi with this cat toy on her head. Usually, you can't put anything on or around her without her flicking it away instantly with her paw. For some reason, she was content to snooze with these feathers on her noggin.
"Where'd that stupid wand thingie go? It was just here..."
"GOTCHA!!"

Goofy Bagels

Walgreens
  • Contac Cold + Flu (28 ct) $6, used $2 coupon (or 10/10 RP) and got back $6 RR = $2 profit

Bought five more at a couple stores - $10 profit in total

I tried my hand at homemade bagels this weekend. Here's the recipe I used if you want to try them too. They weren't so pretty, but they tasted good. Not as yummy as ones you'd get at a bagel shop, but not bad for my first attempt either. I didn't have any instant yeast on hand, so I used bread machine yeast instead. I think that was my first oops. They didn't rise as much as I was hoping, probably because of the yeast.
I also rolled the dough out too far. The recipe said to use both hands to roll them out and when the dough was wider than your hands, then roll it. That left a huge hole in the middle. Some were almost too thin to cut. Oh well, spread some cream cheese on them (free from ShopRite - woo!) and they were good enough for me!

Nature's Getting All Over Me!

What a gorgeous day we had here in NJ today. Da boyfriend and I both took some vacation time today and decided to take Shadow with us on a hike. Would you believe that it was snowing when we first started?!? Snowing! In October! She loves to go hiking. We were out and about for over two hours and she took a quick nap in the car ride home and then was bursting with energy again. I was beat!As we started off, I felt like I was on a movie set for Lord of the Rings.
The trail paralled some small streams and swampy ground. We think it might have been an old railroad track. The path was always higher than the ground beside it and was very straight and level.Across the way was a beautiful background of fall leaves. It looks like there's a fence just before those trees start, but it was actually a line of gray-ish trees instead.
We passed this evergreen tree on our way in and spotted something odd. Christmas ornaments!
This little kitty's from '95! Judging by the number of ornaments on the tree, I assume a family has been slowly decorating for years. Odd, but kinda cute and certainly not something you expect to find in the woods! We also found a bunch of junk by the side of the trail - tires, a washing machine and the remnants of an old car. I have no idea how all that stuff got in there.
The sun kept peeking out from behind the clouds and when it did, it perked everything up.
Weird looking bark, huh?

I just love how sunlight looks when its shining through fall leaves.
Hope you had a happy Friday too!

Hidden CVS Deal

Doesn't this look scrumptious? DBF whipped up this Paula Deen recipe for dinner last night. Its a casserole of chicken, tortillas, cheeses and diced tomatoes - sooooo good! Here's the recipe if you want to try it too.
CVS - new card
  • 2 Mentos Gums $1.79 each, BOGO sale, used two $1 coupons (10/3 SS) = $0.21 profit
  • Neutrogena Triple Moisture Split End Mender (3 oz) $7.49, got back $7.49 EB (Limit 1) = FREE *Not in circular but advertised on shelf tags

  • Used $1 EB, $2 EB, $3 EB and $10 EB, total was $1.60

The cashier didn't want to take both of my AZO coupons, saying one was a copy since it had the same barcode as the other. I explained that they were both from AZO's website and in fact, not copies at all. She ended up scanning them both but didn't look happy about it. Why do some cashiers think its ok to wrongly accuse people of coupon fraud?!?

Then on my old card, I bought:

  • 6 Mentos Gums $1.79 each, BOGO sale, used six $1 coupons (10/3 SS) = $0.63 profit
  • Neutrogena Triple Moisture Split End Mender (3 oz) $7.49, got back $7.49 EB (Limit 1) = FREE *Not in circular but advertised on shelf tags

  • ThermaCare Back Patch (1 ct) $2.99, will get back $2.99 (SCR #23) = FREE *There are coupons out for this but I always have issues printing the Thermacare coupons, so I didn't even bother

We'll see if the Simply Saline clears. The rebate book says it has to be a 1.5 oz, but I can't find any 1.5 oz bottles in the store and these were signed as counting towards the rebate. I have a feeling it was a typo and its supposed to be 2.0 oz for the rebate. I'll let you know if it clears.

  • Bugles $2 and Reese's Fast Break candy bar $0.69 - forgot to put these in pic
  • Used two $5 RR's, total was $0.73

Although I've disabled comments, I'd still love to hear your feedback. You can always reach me via email at frugalsuz at hotmail dot com. I think this is a better route to go than making my blog private, since that forces me to limit how many of you I can share my deals with.

Don't You Just Love Fall?

The air gets brisk, there's that crisp smell to the air, the leaves change colors...I just love it!
Shadow loves the changing of the seasons too! She was full of pep and energy this weekend and kept charging me, so most of my pictures of her are like this:
MOOOOMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Da boyfriend and I took a mini-road trip to upstate NY in the hunt for foliage. Surprisingly, most of the leaves were less fall-like than what we had at home, until we hit this mountain. At the top of the photo, you can see the sun streaking down the mountainside. At one point, a town way out there was lit up, as if it had its own spotlight. Just gorgeous.

A Possible Fix

Well, unfortunately I can't get your feedback on this, but I think I found a work-around to making my blog private. I disabled the comments feature all-together. This means that you'll all be able to see what I write, but not write anything back to me. Your comments today were so touching and meant a lot to me. So many of you said you've been reading my blog for ages and have saved tons of money along with me. That's what this is all about. That's why I share deals and post great moneymakers I find. Its not to brag about how much money I've saved, its to share that info with others so that you all can get the deals too. I love blogging and I love all of you, so I'm here to stay.
Since you can't write me, I've now opened up my mind so I can receive your brainwaves about this issue. Ommmm....

Sorry

Sorry y'all, taking this blog private. If you'd like to keep reading (and I hope you do!), please send me your email address so I can add you to my approved list.

PS - you can leave me your email address in your comment. I won't post the comments so your email won't be floating 'round the internet.

3 pm EDIT - the list of email addresses is now at 71 people (love you guys!). Here's my dilemma though - I can only approve 100 people to read a private blog. With somewhere between 500 and 1,000 people checking in per day, that's obviously not going to cut it. Do any of you have any suggestions? I'm thinking I could set up an email distribution list and email out my posts to anyone past the 100 limit, but if any of you have any other suggestions, I'd really love to hear them. Your support and kind words are so thoughtful and encouraging.

7 PM EDIT - I really hate to say this, but I've reached my 100 person max for approvals. But if you're interested in still reading, please still leave me a comment (I'll delete so your email won't be shown). I'm going to think about this and see if I can figure something else out.

Jackpot

Its been quite an adventure finding these Olay Pro-X cleansers. All but one of the stores I've gone to only had one bottle on the shelf. I think since the Pro-X items are so expensive, RA either doesn't keep a lot on hand to protect against shoplifters or the items just don't sell well. Many of the stores I've been to this week haven't had any in stock or haven't carried any Pro-X items at all. I hit up two stores at lunch today, one was out of stock (but a gorgeous store! I'll definitely be back to that one) and the other had one lonely bottle on the shelf. Bingo! The only problem was that it was a pain and a half to get to the store. I was using my GPS (best tool ever for finding new stores) and the store was 0.3 miles up ahead. The only problem? The road was closed! I had to go around a couple blocks to get there, swerving all over to avoid the raised manhole covers, all with about 10 minutes remaining on my lunch break. I was in and out of that store so fast!

Rite Aid
  • Olay Pro-X Cleanser $16.19 ($17.99 reg price, I got 10% Wellness discount), used $2 coupon (9/26 P&G) and got back $10 UP Reward = $4.19
Neilmed Nasogel Moisturizing Spray (1.52 oz) $5.99, used $2 coupon and will get back $5.99 (SCR #19) = $2 profit
  • Neilmed Nasadock Plus Drying Stand $5.99, will get back $5.99 (SCR #14) = FREE
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon and Wellness coupon for $1 off any $10 cold/flu purchase and $10 UP, total was $8.95

Now I'll also submit for this $20 rebate WYB $50 of Olay Pro-X items. I spent $16.76 out of pocket on the Olay items, but since they were all purchased with free after rebate items so I could use $5/$25 coupons, my overall profit was $16.78. What a great deal...if you can find the cleansers that is!

Its a Miracle!

Guess what arrived in today's mail? A check from Neutrogena for $34.99! After getting a check for $4 and change at my parents' address, I wasn't holding out much hope for any of the other Neutrogena rebates I'd submitted. I think so many people called them complaining that they put a hold on all outgoing rebates and reevaluated them. I still have to wait 8-10 weeks to get a check for the difference on that rebate, but I am very happy that this one came without problems. Its been nothing but problems with J&J - da boyfriend got a rejection letter for the spend $25, get $10 rebate on Aveeno items, so I have to call about that. I don't think I'll ever do another J&J rebate again!
Rite Aid - checked out a new store today but they were out of the Olay Pro X so I did a back-up scenario.
  • Pediacare Children's Cough Syrup or Multi-Symptom Cold (4 oz, not plus 4 oz) $4.99, used $1 coupon (10/10 SS) and will get back $4.99 (SCR #12) = $1 profit

  • Senokot Tablets 50s/100s or Senokot-S Tablets 30s/60s $12.99, will submit for $10 rebate and got back $3 UP Reward = FREE/$0.01 profit
  • Udderly Smooth Lotion (4 oz) $1, got back $1 UP Reward = FREE
  • Antiox Immune Support Shots (tropical fruit or sugar-free blueberry, 2 pack) $2.99, will get back $2.99 (SCR #13, Limit 2) = FREE
  • Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Lip Butter, Dark Chocolate and Peppermint (0.35 oz) $1.99, will get back $1.99 (SCR #10) = FREE
  • Gain Dish Liquid $0.89, used $1 coupon (adjusted down, 10/10 P&G) = FREE

Pears $1.50 ($0.99/lb) - will use these towards a NBPR rebate for produce

Now on to the main shopping

  • 2 Fleischmann’s Pizza Crust Yeasts $1.50 each, used two $0.75 coupons = FREE
  • 4 Tic Tacs $1.19, used four $0.75 coupons (10/3 RP) = FREE
  • 4 Mentos Gums $0.99 each, used four $1 coupons (10/3 SS) = FREE
  • 4 Perdue Chicken breasts/nuggets $2.09 each, used four $0.75 coupons (8/29 RP) = $0.59 each
  • Mama Lucia meatballs $3.74
  • 3 Triscuits $3.33 each (Kraft)
  • 2 Oscar Mayer cold cuts $3.99 each (Kraft)
  • 2 Stouffers Pizzas $3.50 each (Nestle)
  • Used three $5 Kraft catalinas and one $5 Nestle catalina, total was $11.52

The catalinas scanned at self-checkout without any beeps. I was pleasantly surprised about that.

On another note, I read on HCW that folks have spotted TMF tags on Galbani mozzarella (found near deli) but I wasn't able to find any. Keep an eye out!

Turning UP's into Cash

Rite Aid - did these four transactions all on my card

I did these transactions at three different stores and the most Olay Pro X cleansers I saw at any one store was two, so these may be hard to find. I don't think Rite Aid typically keeps too many in stock.

More Celebrity Smells

I was in Kohl's today and found testers for all three perfumes I've bought at CVS and they are all nice. I didn't need perfume, but its nice to splurge on yourself every once and a while. And when you're using EB's and gift cards instead of cash, its even better! CVS - new card
  • 4 Kit Kats (snack size bags) $2.50 each, used $1 off 3 coupon (9/26 SS) and $5 Halloween CRT (no beeps!) and got back $3 EB (WYB $10, Limit 1) = $1 for all four bags
  • Halle Berry Orchid Perfume $16.99, got back $10 EB (WYB $15 worth, Limit 1) = $6.99 *EB did not print for this perfume even though it was listed in the circular and was the right size so the cashier manually printed it for me
  • Used $0.50 EB, $0.99 EB, $1.80 EB, $4 EB, $5 EB and $7.99 EB, total was $1.66

My old CVS card - I used a $10 EB that I got from doing a survey. Love those - its like printing my own money!

  • Shakira Perfume $16.99
  • Trick or Treat Bag $1.99, used $5 Halloween CRT = $2.01 profit
  • Used $3 EB and $10 EB, total was $1.26
Walgreens - did this deal twice
  • 2 Vicks Sinex Liquicaps (20 count) $5 each, used two $4 coupons (9/26 P&G) and got back $5 RR = $3 profit *Looks like these are DayQuil/NyQuil but they just changed the name.

Rite Aid - I had a $1 UP expiring on 10/9 that I had to use up. I'd tried to use it the other day but the Attitudey-Judy cashier I had scanned my UP's too fast and missed this one (dontcha hate that?). When I realized one hadn't scanned, my pre-tax total was too low to use it.

  • 7 Crest Outlast + Scope Toothpastes $2.69 each, used five $0.50 coupons (all I had left! I've used a ton of toothpaste coupons this week 9/26 P&G) and get back seven $2.69 UP Rewards = $2.50 profit
  • Oral B 3D White Vivid Manual Toothbrush $2.69, got back $2.69 UP Reward = FREE
  • 2 Lindt or Ghiardelli Chocolates $2.50 each, used $0.50 off $5 bagged candy Wellness coupon and got back $1 UP Reward (WYB 2) = $3.50
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon, $1 UP and six $2.69 UP's, total was $2.85 - paid with $1.18 on RA gift card and the rest in cash

Does Faith Hill Smell Good?

CVS - got my weekly coupon order yesterday so I was able to get most of my CVS shopping done today. New card -
  • Tena Women's Underwear (14-16 ct) $11.99, used $1.50 coupon (8/1 SS), got back $2 EB (Limit 1) and will submit for TMF rebate (10/3 paper) = $3.50 profit
  • Bausch & Lomb Re-nu Sensitive Solution (12 oz) $7.99, used $1 coupon (printable - not sure if there are any prints left) and got back $7.99 EB (Limit 1) = $1 profit
  • Schick Hydro 3 or Hydro 5 Razor $8.97, used $4 coupon (10/3 paper) and got back $5 EB (Limit 1) = $0.03 profit
  • Used $1.99 EB, $4.99 EB, $5 EB and $9.99 EB, total was $1.67, paid with gift card I earned with my credit card points

Then on da boyfriend's card:

  • Bausch & Lomb Re-nu Sensitive Solution (12 oz) $7.99, used $1 coupon (printable - not sure if there are any prints left) and got back $7.99 EB (Limit 1) = $1 profit
  • Faith Hill perfume $17.99, got back $10 EB (WYB $15 worth of select perfumes) = $7.99
  • Used $0.50 EB, $0.99 EB, $4.99 EB and $9.99 EB, total was $10.29, paid with gift card I earned with my credit card points

I managed to recycle all of my soon to be expired EB's on these two cards with these trips. I was hoping they would have had testers for the perfumes in the store, but unfortunately they didn't. DBF and I are planning to poke around the mall this weekend, so I'm going to see if I can find a tester for this perfume before I open the box.

I also got $5 coupons on all my cards for any "Halloween costumes, accessories or decor" good for tomorrow only. Has anyone had any success using this coupon on Halloween candy? Think it would qualify?

Walgreens - my doctor recommended I keep taking Mucinex DM along with the prescriptions she gave me. I was down to my last pill, so I picked some up using my flexible spending card to pay the OOP. Did this transaction twice:

  • 2 Mucinex DM's $9.99 each, got back $5 RR (WYB $19.98+) = $7.49 each
