Gridlock

Thankfully I got through Irene without any damage.  There are lots of folks whose houses are underwater and my heart goes out to them.  Many are still without power.  Getting across this lovely state to go to and from work has been a nightmare.  For the route I take, all but one highway is closed, so you can imagine the gridlock of everyone having to use just one road.  Fun fun fun!

I got out to do some shopping and after a quick power outage while I was in the store, it was an in and out trip.

Rite Aid
  • Gillette Fusion ProGlide Razor $8.79 ($10.99 reg price, 20% discount), used $4 coupon (7/31 P&G *Expires 8/30) and got back $4 UP (Limit 2) = $0.79
  • Total was $5.41
Then I used that UP to buy another one:
  • Mitchum Advanced Control Women's Deodorant $3.19 ($3.99 reg price, 20% discount), used $2 RA coupon (August Video Values), $1 coupon (8/21 SS) and got back $2 UP (Limit 2) = $1.81 profit
  • Gillette Fusion ProGlide Razor $8.79 ($10.99 reg price, 20% discount), used $4 coupon (7/31 P&G *Expires 8/30) and got back $4 UP (Limit 2) = $0.79

Also headed over to ShopRite for some cheap vitamins.  I have some groceries to buy this week, but I just made a quick trip on my lunch break for these.
  • 4 Osteo BiFlex Glucosamine Supplements $7.99 each, used $7 coupon (8/7 RP) = $3.96 or $0.99 each

Feeling Flat?

I have a problem.  A lack of fizzies problem.  What's up with all the flat soda?  Is anyone else experiencing this?  Coke or Pepsi, cans or bottles, bought at supermarkets or convenience stores, it all seems to be flat lately!  I really just don't understand how this could be.  I'm really hoping the soda I got today will break the cycle.

Walgreens
  • 5 cases Diet Pepsi $13 (fifth case free with in-circular coupon)
  • Poland Spring Bottled Water (24 pack) $5.49, will submit for $5 Redhook NBPR rebate (WYB 20+ pack for $5.01+) = $0.49

I Feel the Earth Move Under my Feet

As I'm sure you've heard, there was a small earthquake yesterday in Virginia that tremored its way all the way up the East Coast. I've never experienced an earthquake before and it was surreal. I looked up at my bulletin board and thought to myself - "woah, I think that's moving. I must be more tired than I realized!" hahaha

CVS - I read on HCW that certain Conair straighteners were still producing EB's so I figured it couldn't hurt to see if I could find some. I lucked out and found a store that had three! I wish I could find a picture of the box to show you, but these are what the straighteners look like. I found pink and green, but I've read there are blue ones too.

  • Conair Infiniti i series 3/4 inch ceramic straightener (model CS65P 0 74108 21026 5 - pink or model CS65G 0 74108 21026 5 - green) - clearanced to $9.12 (from $36.49), got back $5 EB (WYB Conair appliance, monthly deal, limit 2) = $4.12 each
I used the EB's from this one to buy a second and then got a third on a separate card.

DEAD DEAL - man, that went fast! As of this morning (8/24) the RR's are no longer printing. Then I headed over to Walgreens to try a Dove deal I read about. It worked perfectly! I can't guarantee this deal will last all week, so get in while the gettins good!

  • 3 Dove Beauty Bars (3.15 oz) $0.99 each with in-circular coupon, got back $6 RR (WYB 3) = $3.03 profit
  • 4 Keebler Cookies (2 soft batch and 2 fudge stripe) $10.76*, used two $1 off 2 coupons (8/7 RP) and got back $5 RR (WYB $10 of select items) = $3.76 or $0.94 each *The cookies were supposed to ring up four for $10 (or $2.99 when you buy just one). The fudge stripe cookies rang up $2.39 each. I realized this after I'd left the store and didn't feel like going back in for $0.80. Watch the register carefully if you buy these!
  • Total was $11.94
Then at another store, I used the RR from the Keebler stuff towards more Dove

  • 3 Dove Beauty Bars (3.15 oz) $0.99 each with in-circular coupon, got back $6 RR (WYB 3) = $3.03 profit
  • Candle - clearanced to $2.99
  • Used $5 RR, total was $1.38
I've seen a lot of clearanced candles at Walgreens lately but the prices haven't been right. The one I picked up is pretty big and smells great. The profit from the Dove made it free anyway. My favorite price!

Conair Update

Being without a computer is so bizarre! I keep catching myself thinking - oh let me go check that and then WHAM! realize I can't. Have you ever tried to turn the lights on when the power is out? That's the sensation. Oh well, there are certainly worse things in life.

I went to CVS last night and found a clearanced Conair 3/4 inch straightener for $8.62. It was in an orange box (sorry I can't take a pic to show you) but didn't produce any EB's. CVS probably fixed the glitch that was allowing clearance items to count for this deal. I'm very happy with the $8 price though.

I also got a coupon from the coupon machine for $1.50 off any deodorant. Combining that with the $1 coupon from Sunday's SS makes the Mitchum deodorant $0.49 this week ($1.99 sale price). Not bad!

Dry that Hair!

Picture courtesy of munchkin77 on Slick Deals.

CVS
  • Conair Infiniti Hair Dryer - clearanced to $8.62 (down from $34.49) and got back $5 EB (monthly deal, Limit 2) = $3.62
  • Used $1 EB and $3 EB, total was $5.15
The store I went to had a second one so I bought that as well. I bought them in separate transactions because I'd read that all the EB's weren't printing if you bought two at once. But now it seems the deal may be dead. Some folks are reporting that tags in the store show the Conair deal as valid only through 8/20 (some have seen thru 8/27). If your EB's don't print and you're at a super friendly store that has valid tags up, it may be worth asking if they'll manually print your EB's. But as always, YMMV since its a clearance price.

Hmm, just looking ahead to next week's circular and this Conair deal is listed! So who knows what's going on!

Folks found some other clearanced Conair items including straighteners, and even without the EB's, these are still great prices.

DBF and I watched The Lincoln Lawyer yesterday, have you seen this? We loved it!

Technical Difficulties

We had a strong thunderstorm the other night which briefly knocked out my power. Unfortunately, it also fried my computer. I can't log in at all and a consultation with Geek Squad revealed that the hard drive is toast. I bought my computer refurbished in 2004 for about $600 so I've certainly gotten a lot of use out of it. It got me through grad school and the start of my couponing craze. I've been slowly moving my files over to da boyfriend's computer but unfortunately hadn't transferred everything yet. Thank goodness I'd uploaded all my pictures to Snapfish. But the spreadsheet where I track all of my purchases and rebates is gone. Luckily, I'd been emailing myself the scans of all my rebate documents, so I have those in case I have any problems with a rebate. And I have a skeleton copy of the spreadsheet, so I don't have to recreate any of the document or the formulas. But all the data is gone. Monthly budget, gone. Spreadsheet where I track all my account balances, gone. Its amazing how much I relied on that hunkajunk! Its going to be a while until I have a computer at home again, so please bear with me.

And be sure to buy new power strips from time to time people! (smacking forehead)

Great Degree Deal

The Degree catalina is running at tons of stores including Walgreens. If you can find the trial size deodorants there, you can make money on this deal. I was very happy to find these at ShopRite because this smaller size bottle is producing an extra $4 catalina. Love that!

ShopRite
  • 4 Degree Men's Deodorant (1.7 oz size) $1.78 each, used four $0.75 coupons (7/31 RP) and got back two $4 catalinas = $6.88 profit *You can buy other varieties of Degree for this deal but I'm not 100% that those would print the bonus $4 catalina
  • 4 Keebler Granola Bars $2.50 each, used four $0.75 coupons (7/10 RP) = $4 or $1 each
  • Total was $5.41
There are tearpad TMF rebates floating around for the granola bars (valid until 10/1). I haven't found one yet, but I'll save the receipt and UPC in the hopes that I do come across one. I tried one of the bars just now and I gotta say, I'm not that impressed with them so I'd really like to get $2.50 back as a rebate for them.

Bought another four Degree deodorants separately - another $6.88 profit. DBF snagged one of them before I took the pic.

  • 4 Finish Powerball Tablets $2.99, used four $0.75 coupons (7/31 SS) = $5.96 or $1.49 each
  • SR hot dog and hamburger rolls $1 each (WYB 2)
  • Used two $5 catalinas, total was $2.45 after $0.10 bag discount
I had an idea the other day - those little stickers folks use at yard sales would be a great way to identify expiration dates on items. I usually handwrite the date on the box with a sharpie, but that's easy to overlook, especially if the packaging is a dark color. I picked up these stickers at Rite Aid for about $2 (and there's a $1 rebate when you buy three school supply items this month). There's no way these pills will still be lying around in 2014, but this will help ensure we use up other vitamins that are expiring sooner than that. How do you organize your stockpile?

Delizioso

A friend at work just got back from a trip to Italy and brought me goodies! I loves me some pesto and I'm assured you can't possibly have pesto without this particular pasta. Can't wait to whip some up. Isn't it interesting that the box is a different color? Every box of Barilla I've ever seen here is blue. And an after dinner treat, chocolate!

I definitely could use the chocolate with the month I've been having. Remember my hit and run accident from the other day? Well it turns out that since the lane I was in was merging into Mr. Hit and Run's lane, I'm the one at fault. Just swell. Thank goodness the damage was minimal because if I were to get it fixed, it would now have to go through my insurance. And I thank my lucky stars I wasn't hurt. That's all that really matters. My car would have been banged up sooner or later. I've yet to own a car that didn't have a scratch here, a ding there, chip in the windshield here (and there). :)

"Special" K

Had me a doozy of a cashier today at Walgreens. I had a raincheck for the Mitchum from a couple weeks ago. It read two for $2, Limit 4. Why the gent who wrote it up for me didn't write $1 each, I haven't a clue. But in any case, I think two for $2 is pretty clear. Apparently its up for discussion! The cashier entered the first bottle of Mitchum in for $2. When I objected, he realized his error (after a great deal of raincheck scrutiny) and voided the item off the order. Or rather, he tried. And tried. And tried again. And frowned, and tried again.

I have no problem waiting for a cashier who is having a hard time with something, but it does get a wee bit awkward when you can feel the line building up behind you. The cashier kept sending everyone over to Beauty (I'm sure they were thrilled) and kept trying to void the deodorant. He finally gave up and called the Manager, who voided the whole transaction and we started all over again. The Manager gave the raincheck another "scrutinous" look and asked me where I got it. I told him it wasn't from this particular store but that I didn't remember which store gave it to me. He gave me a funny look and said "You don't remember?" Now let's take a moment to pause here. When you get a raincheck, do you always make a mental note of the store that awarded you that raincheck? Of course you don't! Who cares?

I told the Manager that I didn't remember because I stopped into a Walgreens I'd never been into before, which was true. DBF and I were driving around a couple Saturdays ago running errands and were in a town I'm unfamiliar with. But even if I'd replied - "oh it was the Walgreens the town over," what would it matter? Sigh, I just want my free Mitchum people. That's all. I'm not committing raincheck fraud here. I just want fresh smelling pits! :)

After 15 minutes, I finally left the Walgreens with:
  • 4 Mitchum Deodorants $1 each (raincheck price), used four $1 coupons = FREE
  • 4 Special K Bars $2.50 each, got back $5 RR (WYB $10) = $5 or $1.25 each
  • Used $1.50 RR and $3 RR, total was $5.78
Lucked out and found another TMF on the USPS Bandit tape today! I was fully expecting to have to hunt all month for this.
  • USPS Bandit Packaging Tape $4.23 ($5.29 reg price, 20% discount), will send away for TMF rebate on package and will also get back $4 (WYB 2, SCR #52, Limit 2 offers) = $4 profit *I bought another roll of this tape yesterday that also had a TMF rebate on it
  • Gillette Fusion ProGlide Razor $8.79 ($10.99 reg price, 20% discount), used $4 coupon (7/31 P&G) and got back $5 UP (Limit 2) = $0.21 profit
  • Oral B Complete or 3D Action Power Toothbrush $5.99, used $3 coupon (7/31 P&G) and will get back $2.99 (SCR #39) = FREE
  • Used $1 non-prescription coupon (August Video Values) and $5 UP, total was $2.86

Great Rebate Day

Don't you just love opening your mailbox and finding rebate checks in there? Today was fantastic. I got: $4.79 Snapple rebate, $10 Heineken rebate on $10.01 of bottled water, $15 Heineken rebate on $25 of summer essentials and $25 Amstel rebate on $100 of groceries. Love that! I was very psyched to see the Snapple rebate because I wasn't sure if that one would come through. I bought a 6 pack of green tea for that rebate, but the UPC wouldn't scan at the store. The cashier scanned a pack of lemon tea instead, but it didn't occur to me until I got home that this UPC switch might give me an issue. The receipt said lemon and I submitted a UPC for green tea, but Snapple gave me my moolah anyway! Now that's good customer service.

ShopRite
  • 4 Marcal rolls of toilet paper four for $3/$0.75 each (must buy four for this price)
  • 4 Marcal tissues $0.99 each
  • 4 Milo's Kitchen Dog Treats $2.50 each, used four $1.50 coupons (6/26 SS) = $4 or $1 each
  • Got back two $5 catalinas (for buying six qualifying items x 2) and two catalinas for a FREE reusable bag, total was $11.56 (got $0.10 bag discount)
There are a bunch of great things about this week's deals. First - they're stackable. There are a ton of deals this week, but the deal I did was a $5 catalina and free bag when you buy six qualifying items. I did the deal twice at the same time and got back two $5 cats. You can do the deal up to four times at once. Second - the catalinas are good right away, so I used the two $5 catalinas I got towards another round of this deal at another store. Third - without the dog treats, this deal gets you totally FREE toilet paper and tissues! You can buy 4 toilet paper rolls for $3 and two tissues for $1.98 = $4.98 and you get back a $5 catalina. Granted, Marcal doesn't make the most plush items out there, but free is free.

Rite Aid
  • Gillette Fusion ProGlide Razor $8.79 ($10.99 reg price, 20% discount), used $4 coupon (7/31 P&G) and got back $5 UP (Limit 2) = $0.21 profit
  • Oral B Complete or 3D Action Power Toothbrush $5.99, used $3 coupon (7/31 P&G) and will get back $2.99 (SCR #39) = FREE
  • Used $1 non-prescription purchase coupon (Aug. Video Values) and two $3 UP's, total was $1.33
Repeated on DBF's card

I also found a TMF rebate on a package of USPS Bandit packaging tape ($4.23 with 20% discount). I'm going to keep an eye out for another package with this rebate because there's a SCR on these this month! When you buy two, you'll get back $4 (SCR #52, Limit 2 offers). If I can find another TMF, that's a $4 profit. If I can't find a TMF, there are also packages with a $2 rebate on them, that would make this a $1.77 profit. Either way, that sounds good to me. I submit rebates at multiple addresses (mine, DBF's and my parents') so you'd have to have at least two addresses to make this work for you too.
