August Savings

August Monthly Totals - I cringe when I end up actually spending money for the month. A whopping $60 for almost $1,500 of merchandise and all my groceries, and I feel like its an awful month. Its amazing how far I've come from the months where I'd spend a couple hundred bucks on much less stuff.

Looked back through my spreadsheet after posting this and realized I'd included a purse I bought at Target into my numbers for the month. I normally wouldn't include items like that, but I'd paid with $30 of rewards gift cards I got from doing surveys for Biore. I feel a smidge better about spending more like $30 for grocery/household/personal items for the month than I do about $60.

  • Merchandise Total (before coupons): $1,468.11
  • Value of Coupons & Store Sales: $623.93
  • Rewards/Gift Cards/EB's Used: $581.68
  • Rewards/Gift Cards/EB's Earned: $333.32
  • Rebates: $554.42
  • Total Cost to me for the Month: $59.70 (this includes the cost of the rebate forms and coupons I purchased for the month)
  • # of Items Purchased: 396, # of Free Items: 283

Rebates Received - FYI - never received rebates for the Pssssst shampoo I purchased back in March so I just returned them. They were peelie rebates on the bottles, so if you see them, I'd just ignore them.

  • 5 Smart Source coupon inserts for 8/15 $5.49 - DBF's mom scored a bunch of RP inserts for me, so there was no need to place my normal order from Mad Coupons.
  • 10 SS coupon inserts for 8/22 $9.95 - since there wasn't a RP insert this week, it was a smidge cheaper to buy my inserts from ebay for this week (I would normally pay $10.50 from Mad Coupons)
  • 10 coupon inserts for 8/1, 8/8 and 8/29 - $10.50 each (Mad Coupons orders)

Random Money Stuffs

  • Increased my contribution to my 401(k) plan to 11% of my salary and upped my monthly contribution to my Roth IRA to $130 (from $120). Every little bit helps, right?
  • I'm also working on rolling over my 401(k) from my former employer to my current plan. The annual rate of return on that money is in the ballpark of 2.9% (ouch!) so I'm much rather have it all in one spot and earning me more money each year.

Busy Weekend

'Da boyfriend and I were on the go this whole weekend. I had some free movie ticket promos that were expiring on 8/31 so on Saturday, we saw The Expendables (loved it!) and on Sunday, we saw Despicable Me (double loved it!). We had planned on seeing Salt, but it wasn't playing at the theater that the promo codes were valid at. No biggie, Despicable Me was surprisingly funny! I loved those little squishy guys and how they squeaked.

We also stopped by The Gap to use a $50 gift card I purchased for only $25 via Groupon last week. The store didn't have the size jeans I wanted, so after speaking with a manager, I was able to order the jeans online and the store will let me return them and rebuy them in the store, paying with my gift card. You can't use the gift card to purchase other gift cards or to buy anything online, so I was very happy that they worked this special deal for me. It used to be that if they didn't have the item in the store, they'd order it for you but they did away with that.

Next stop was JCPenney. I had a $10 off $25 coupon that I got in the mail and two more that I'd printed (expired 8/28). We used two of them to buy four towels ($11.99 each, BOGO for $1) and two bath mats ($14.99 each). My bath mats bit the dust almost a year ago and I didn't feel like forking over cash to replace them, so I've had folded beach towels in my bathroom since then. Its nice to have actual bath mats again! We used some gift cards to pay the balance on each transaction. I used the third coupon on a cute fall sweater and a pair of earrings, again using a gift card to pay.

I Just Might be Done with RiteAid for the Week

maybe...
And some more Rite Aid shopping...are you surprised? I saw the Garnier deal after I'd done my first transaction today. I was planning on finishing out what I'd planned to buy, and then picking up the Garnier tomorrow. But then I thought to myself, "Self...that's silly. Buy the Garnier first, then use those UP Rewards to buy the other items" and that's just what I did!
  • Tugaboos Travel Size Diapers $0.89 ($0.99 reg price, got 10% Wellness discount), used $1 coupon (found inside package I purchased previously) = $0.11 profit
  • Kerasal Foot Ointment (30 g) $6.99, used $1 coupon and will get back $6 (SCR #33) = FREE/$0.01 profit *Will send away for FREE pair of socks as well

  • Total was $11.85, could have also used $2 RA coupon but I had no desire to watch all those stupid videos. $7 profit is fine with me. :)

Free Binders at RA

Rite Aid
  • C Booth Triple Action body wash/sham $6.29 (regularly $6.99, 10% wellness discount), used $6 circular coupon and will get back $2 (SCR #73) = $1.71 profit
  • Zone Perfect Bars $5.84 (regularly $6.49), DBF and I wanted to try these. If we don't like them, I'll send away for their guarantee.
  • 4 Mead 5 Star Binders $4.99 each, BOGO sale, used four $2 coupons (8/1 RP) and $1 off $10 of school supplies coupon (printed on receipt from previous purchase) = $0.98
  • 4 Trident Gums $1 each (should have just bought two, my total without these was around $23 and I wasn't thinking when I grabbed all four)
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon and $2 UP Reward, total was $5.06
At another store, I bought:
  • C Booth Lotion $6.29 (regularly $6.99, 10% wellness discount), used $6 circular coupon and will get back $2 (SCR #77) = $1.71 profit *The rebate circular says the lotion has to be 32 oz (this was 18 I think) but I didn't see any 32 oz bottles in the store at all. The store had this variety tagged for the rebate, so we'll see if it clears.
  • Zone Perfect Bars $5.84 (regularly $6.49)
  • 6 Mead 5 Star Binders $4.99 each, BOGO sale, used six $2 coupons (8/1 RP) and $1 off $10 of school supplies coupon (printed on receipt from previous purchase) = $1.97
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon, total was $4.12

*Now I'll probably qualify for a $4 rebate (SCR #105 - $4 WYB $25 or $2 WYB $15). The BOGO free binders don't count towards the total for the rebate, so by buying five at $4.99, I got up to $24.95. If the rebate doesn't go through, I'll pick up something cheap next week to finish it off. This rebate is good for ANY Mead items. If you can find enough binders at one store, there's a $2 UP Reward this week when you buy $20 of five star products.

ShopRite - bought the Hefty's at a couple stores
  • 10 Hefty garbage bags $1.24 each, used $0.55 coupons (8/1 RP) and $1 coupons = $0.14 - $0.24 each
  • Kellogg's Cinnabon Cereal $2.99, used $0.75 coupon (8/8 RP) = $1.49 *Thought there would be a Try Me Free rebate inside the box, but nada. Did I get the wrong kind? I know I've seen folks online talking about a rebate inside these.

Back to RA

Its definitely a slow week, but there are still a couple good deals out there. I bought these on my boyfriend's Wellness card and will submit the rebates in his name.

Rite Aid
  • AMO Complete Multi-Purpose Solution (12 oz.) $7.99, used $1 coupon (8/15 RP) and will get back $7.99 (SCR #51) = $1 profit
  • Tugaboos Diapers (trial size) $0.89, will get back $1 (SCR #41) = $0.21 profit
  • Total was $7.88

There's a $1 coupon inside the Tugaboos package that I'll use to buy a second pack for my rebate account. When these diapers first came out, they were everywhere in the stores but now they're a little harder to find. I've been on the lookout for them for a week or so, and this was the first store that had them in stock. I found them in a wire bin towards the front of the store, but hunt around. They could be anywhere.

Other than running these couple errands, my boyfriend and I just lounged around. As you can see, it wasn't the nicest day out. We watched Green Zone, made some eggs and hung around in our sweats.

Even Mousse said it looked crappy out.
The weather yesterday was gorgeous, so with my sister in tow, we made our annual trek to the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Its part 4-H Fair, part craft fair, part amusement park. My boyfriend bought these beautiful earrings for me from one of the vendors. We made sure to get vanilla milkshakes from the 4-H stand (delish!), strolled through the barns looking at sheep, goats, chicken and rabbits, poked around the craft booths, watched the horse show for a bit and tried to avoid getting hit by passerbys wielding inflatable mallets, lime green aliens and gigantic stuffed toys. Fun for all! :)

Friday the 13th Fun

ShopRite - got this deal from mb's blog. I couldn't find the Kellogg's Pop Mix-Its, so I just got the Pop Tarts instead.
  • 10 Kellogg's Pop Tarts three for $5 (10th one rang up as $2.35), used five $1 off 2 coupons (8/1 RP), got back $10 catalina (WYB 10) and will submit for $10 rebate (WYB 10 items in one transaction) = $7.65 profit *Just was doing some research on this online form and I'm not 100% sure it will work. It seems like Kellogg's is putting the rebate form in various store circulars only. I'm going to hold off sending this in for now.
  • SR Reusable bag $0.99, used FREE catalina = FREE
  • DiGiorno Deep Dish Pizza $3.59, used FREE coupon (Kraft home mailer, valid up to $3.30) = $0.29
  • Used two $5 catalinas, total was $2.66

Walgreens

  • Humphrey's Teething Relief (found in baby aisle) $5.99, used $1.50 WAG coupon (monthly coupon book) and will submit for Try Me Free rebate (peelie found on package) = $1.50 profit
  • Geisha Mushrooms $1.19
  • Used $4 RR, total was $1.68 - there was a sign covering the price of the Humphrey's that said that after coupon it would be $4.99. With the mushrooms, my total would have been just over $6 so I was planning to use two $3 RR's. Instead, it was cheaper than I thought so that threw me off a bit.

Separately, I bought:

  • Pill Glide Swallowing Spray (found near Pharmacy) $6.99, will submit for Try Me Free rebate = FREE
  • Folder $0.09
  • Used $3 RR and $7 RR, total was $0.57

Since the deals at Walgreens aren't looking so hot, I'm trying to use up some rewards on rebate items.

Derp

Does anyone else dread organizing coupon inserts? Ugh, this mess has been sitting on my coffee table for a week or so now, and it was driving me crazy.
Ahh, that's much better. Here's the method I use to organize my inserts each week.

What a day. I had to do some interviews today for an AA position we're trying to fill. I mentioned before that I'm going to be transferring campuses soon, so I did the interviews along with the Dean I'm going to be replacing. We're good friends, so we chatted about the resumes and what we wanted to ask before the interviews started. It amazes me in this job market how sloppy people can be on their resumes! I will admit that I have high standards and I'm looking for a strong candidate to work in my department. The position involves writing letters, keeping databases up to date, checking records, etc. In short, detail-oriented work, so I expect your resume to be error-free. When I see things like "19940" instead of "1994" or three different font sizes on the same resume (and I'm not talking about making your name bold, I'm talking three different job tasks, three different sizes), its not encouraging. We also received resumes from former students, which I think is great. If you loved your experience with us enough to want to come back and work here, fabulous! But please don't list that you received a BA from us when that's not even a degree that we award.

During our interviews, we mentioned how I'm going to be moving into this position shortly and the current Dean is moving to another campus. It does not bode well to congratulate her on her upcoming transfer and ignore the person that would soon be your supervisor if you were to get the job. Also, probably not a good idea to ramble on and on so that your interviewers barely have a chance to ask any questions. Or tell us that you already know what the position entails, even though we haven't discussed it yet. Probably also shouldn't neglect to mention on your resume that you're working for the college already and then blame the omission on the gal whose helping you with your resume. Sigh. The interviews continue next week and I really hope we find some great applicants.

Until then, all I have to say is, DERP!

Finally Got to my Weekly Shopping

I got my weekly coupon order in from Mad Coupons the other day, so off to the stores I went. If you haven't heard about Mad Coupons, let me tell you...its fabulous! You pay $10.50 for TEN (count 'em TEN!) copies of the coupon inserts for that week, including shipping costs. And the rates don't change depending on how many inserts there are that week. Its always $10.50. I send off my payment via PayPal on Saturdays and I usually get my coupons on Wednesday or Thursday of the following week. The service is pretty new, so I imagine it won't stay at these fabulous rates forever.

The downside to ordering coupons online is that you obviously don't have them in-hand to do a sale right away. Most weeks that's fine with me, but this week, most of the deals I wanted involved Sunday's coupons so I had to wait. The newspapers in my area stopped carrying the RP insert, so I'd be stuck buying those online anyway. But even on weeks where there isn't a RP, at $1.50-$2 a pop, Mad Coupons blows the price of buying papers out of the water.
Rite Aid - did this transcation twice, one for my rebates and one for my boyfriend's account. I also used up all the UP Rewards I had on-hand, so no pressure to rush back in to RA if the deals aren't looking hot.
  • Bengay Pain Relief + Massage Gel $7.99, used $3 coupon and $3 in-circular coupon and will submit for Try Me Free rebate (6/20 RP) = $6 profit
  • Gillette Fusion ProGlide Razor $9.99, used $4 coupon (8/1 P&G) and will get back $5 (SCR #78) = $0.99
  • 4 Crest Pro-Health or 3D White Rinses $5 each, used four $2 coupons (8/1 P&G) and will get back $10 (SCR #39) = $2 *Also counts towards SCR #556
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon, $3 UP Reward and $5 UP Reward, total was $8.73

CVS - stopped in mainly to get some Skippy PB but the store only had chunky, so I walked out with a raincheck instead.

  • 2 Kudos Bars $2 each
  • Used $1 EB and $1 EB, total was $2

When I was a wee lass, my mom and I flew to Florida, just the two of us. I only have a few memories from that trip - waving goodbye to my dad and sisters at the airport, watching cartoons in the hotel room, laying down beach towels on the black leather seats of the car we rented (Florida + black leather seats + summer = unhappy frugalsuz) so we could stand sitting on them and flicking lizards off the screen door of my grandparents' house each morning. My mom assures me that we visited Disney, but I just don't remember! One of my clearest memories is from the plane ride. Our in-flight meal included a Kudos bar and I remember turning to my mom in amazement, wondering what this little bar of heaven was called. I'm sure she laughed at me (as she usually does when I say stupid stuff like that) and passed it off, but my life was forever changed that day. Every once and a while, I like to nosh on some Kudos bars for old times sake.

ShopRite

  • 5 Ziploc Bags $1.50 each (fifth was $2.09), used four $0.55 coupons (7/25 SS) and got back $5 catalina and cat for FREE reusable bag (WYB 5) = $1.31 profit
  • Peaches $0.69/lb = $1.99
  • Hanes undies $2.99
  • Used $5 catalina, total was $4.08
My sister and I were poking around in Target and I came across this adorable bag for $34.99. I've grown tired of my current bag (I'm a one-bag-at-a-time-kinda gal), so I decided to splurge. I used two $15 rewards cards that I got from Biore surveys, so $7.44 OOP.

Zebra print liner! How can you say no to that?
