Yeesh!

Recently a tiny, four legged tenant moved into my apartment building, specifically my garage stockpile room. After devouring a bag of kitty treats and leaving me little presents, DBF and I decided it was time to serve our little friend with an eviction notice via a mouse trap. I found the little guy last night, dead from the poison. I was perfectly happy to leave him there until my boyfriend could come over and dispose of him for me. But unfortunately, its been pretty hot and muggy in NJ lately and as my boyfriend pointed out to me, it was better to dispose of the mouse now before other creatures found him. (shudder) So I bucked up, stuck my hand inside three (yes, three) plastic bags, grabbed the trap, turned the bag inside out, tied it shut and scurried over to the dumpster. My boyfriend was thoughtful enough to mention to me to make sure he was dead before I picked him up to avoid getting bitten. Thanks for putting that awful thought into my head honey! When my fingers made contact with the trap through my protective layers of plastic, a shudder went through my whole body and I had to resist the urge to let out a girly-girl shreik. Yeeeeeessssshhhhhhh.

Rebates are a Girl's Best Friend

Rite Aid - FYI - reports are coming in that next month's Video Values coupons will be one-use only. Bummer! If you can get your shopping done by 6/30, you can use last month's coupon which is fine to use multiple times.
  • 4 John Frieda Root Awakening Sham/Cond/Stylers $5 each, used four $3 coupons (6/6 SS) and got back $10 UP Rewards = $7 profit
  • Style Science Sunglasses $12.99, used $10 coupon (*Expires 6/30) and will get back $5 (SCR #40) = $2.01 profit *I'm hoping I can find another NBPR rebate on sunglasses to use along with this moneymaker.
  • $15 Papa Johns Gift Card
  • Used $5 off $20 coupon and two $10 UP Rewards, total was $2.95, overall profit = $7.05

CVS - done on my new card. I've been getting so many $4 off $20 coupons on this card that I wish I'd signed up for a new card sooner! I could have bought the Tena at Rite Aid instead ($6 profit there too) but I wanted to use up some EB's. With the lack-luster deals there lately, I've had a lot of EB's just sitting around.

  • 3 Aveeno sham/cond/stylers $6.49 each and one Aveeno Ultra Calming lotion $6.99, used three $1.50 coupons and one $2 coupon, got back $10 EB (Limit 1) and will submit for $10 rebate = $0.04 profit
  • Used $4 off $20 coupon, $1 EB, $2.97 EB, $5 EB and $5 EB, total was $3.49, overall profit = $2.54

Separately, I bought:

  • 2 Tena Ultra Thins $12.99 each, BOGO sale, used two $3 peelie coupons (found at RA, also $2.50 coupons available) and will submit for TMF rebate (6/6 SS - regional) = $6 profit
  • 2 Stayfree Pads $3.69 each, BOGO sale and used two $2 coupons = $0.31 profit
  • 2 Milky Way bars $0.89 each, BOGO sale = $0.89
  • Pepsi $1.79 and Rold Gold Pretzels $0.99 - if I buy a second set of these, I'll get back $1 EB
  • Used $4 off $20 coupon, total was $6.46, overall profit = $6.54

Was only going to buy the Tena and Stayfree but the cashier vetoed my $4 off $20 coupon when my post-sale total was below $20. Bummer. Also had to listen to his little sermon about how companies put out all these coupons only to jack the prices of the items up, fooling all us stupid consumers. I just smiled and nodded as I used my "stupid coupons," making a quick and easy six dollars. Ok buddy. :)

Green on My Table = Green in my Wallet

Woo, look at all those John Frieda's! There are 44 in total (four leaked and are drying in the sink), bought from 7 different stores. I didn't clean out any one store, leaving plenty for other couponers. I did two transactions in most of the stores. I got my $5 and $25 gift cards for completing the skincare rebates yesterday, so I was able to use them today to cover a lot of my OOP. Here's my main transaction, short and simple:
  • 4 John Frieda Root Awakening Sham/Cond/Stylers $5 each, used four $3 coupons (6/6 SS) and got back $10 UP Rewards
  • Used $5 off $20 coupon, total was $4.05, overall profit = $5.95

Then I whipped up some other items to buy along with the JF so that I could use a $5 off $25 coupon (Expires 6/30). I figured the cashiers might be more willing to let me do back to back transactions if I used a different coupon on the second one. I would have been better off if I'd bought some of the free rebate items, but I didn't have the right coupons with me. I have some more JF coupons to use up, so I'll buy those items later this week.

  • 4 John Frieda Root Awakening Sham/Cond/Stylers $5 each, used four $3 coupons (6/6 SS) and got back $10 UP Rewards
  • Tresemme Fresh Start or Naturals Sham/Cond $3.99, used $1 coupon and $2 RA coupon (Exp. 6/30) and got back $1 UP Rewards = FREE/$0.01 profit
  • Welch's Grape Juice $3, used $2 coupon (printable from Facebook, no longer available) = $1
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon, total was $6.32, overall profit = $4.68

Here's another transaction - did this one twice

  • 4 John Frieda Root Awakening Sham/Cond/Stylers $5 each, used four $3 coupons (6/6 SS) and got back $10 UP Rewards
  • Huggies Pure and Natural Diapers $8.99, used $2.50 coupon, $1 RA coupon (Expires 6/30) and will get back $2 (SCR #42) = $3.49
  • Used $5 off $25 coupon, $2 UP Reward and $3 UP Reward, total was $4.54, overall profit = $2.46

Another one

  • 4 John Frieda Root Awakening Sham/Cond/Stylers $5 each, used four $3 coupons (6/6 SS) and got back $10 UP Rewards

Chicken Rebate

Acme - had two $10 catalinas expiring and just received a NBPR rebate for chicken from a houndfriend that expires 6/30. What a perfect combo
  • Perdue Chicken Cutlets $4.99 and Weaver Chicken Patties $6.99 - will submit for $6 Bud Light NBPR rebate (WYB $10.01 of fresh/frozen chicken, offer #28360) = $5.98
  • 4 Vitamin Waters $1 each, used four $0.50 coupons (tearpad found at CVS) = FREE
  • Used $10 catalina, total was $1.98

Repeated this same transaction for a second rebate. This is the first time I'm submitting for a NBPR rebate when my OOP is less than the required purchase amount. In the past, I would have made sure to pay at least $10 total, but I'm betting this will still go through even though I used the $10 cats. Fingers crossed!

Spring/Summer Cleaning

Guess what my boyfriend and I did this weekend? Went on an exotic vacation? Rocked out to a ear-splitting concert? Had a fancy dinner in NYC? Nope! We cleaned my apartment! And I loved every minute of it! haha It started out as steam cleaning the carpets. We moved all the furniture from one area to another, I vacuumed with the regular machine (got all those spiderwebs and dust bunnies lurking in corners) and then DBF went through with the steam clean machine. While he was doing that (it takes a while), I cleaned, dusted and organized. Then I started looking around and thinking - hmm, wonder how those bookshelves would look on the other side of the room near my desk? Then we could move that armchair into the corner where the bookshelves were. By the time he shut off the machine, I had a whole plan worked out. Poor guy, signed on for some carpet cleaning and got a whole redecoration instead! :)

Once we got going, we started throwing away some old stuff that I'd been meaning to get rid of for a while. I think we made 5-6 trips out to the dumpster. There's something about taking everything out of its "spot" to make you reevaluate it and whether or not its worth keeping. Some stuff was very old and shabby, like the two lamps I had on either side of my entertainment center. I picked one up to move it out of the way and the base totally disintegrated.

About six hours after we started, the carpets in the living room, dining room, hallway and bedroom were clean and smelling fresh. Everything had been dusted and scrubbed. We grabbed dinner at Ruby Tuesday and did some home decor shopping - throw rug and wire basket for mail and circulars at Home Goods, table lamp, white board and kitchen decor at Target, beautiful painting from Bed, Bath and Beyond and a new lamp from Walmart. Combined with the couple of decorations I got in Virginia last weekend and moving some furniture around, I feel like I'm living in a whole new apartment!

I love this whole desk/office area now. It makes more sense to have the bookshelves in this corner and opens up the space a bit. My armchair used to be here and it took up the whole corner. Don't worry, that's not a dead mouse or anything by the plant in the first pic. Just the kitties' skunk toy.
My mom picked up this country star for me on a recent trip to Lancaster, PA. Such a beautiful shade of blue.
Love this white board/cork board set we found at Target. DBF made them happy boards for me. Happy boards with quite the uni-brow.
Another Target find. DBF spotted them and we both loved their older feel. I think he's trying to encourage me to cook more. HA!
Picked up this baby in Virginia at the Kirkland Home store. The pieces are smooth metal and I love the mix of the burgandy and brown. This was my second find from Virginia. We hung it above my couch and I feel like it ties in the colors from my armchair really well.
This painting is living right above the armchair and I'm crazy about it! The light below adds a cozy touch to the space, but its a little dimmer than I expected since the shade is a dark brown. If I want to do any late-night reading in the chair, I may have to flip on the dreaded overhead light. Oh the agony.
Another cozy corner, this light is so cool! We found it at Walmart of all places. I love the wire basket on top of the tiny shelf (found it at CVS on clearance! The shelf that is, found the basket at Home Goods). I stole the idea from my sister who has something similar where she keeps her mail.

That's all for now folks. Thanks for stopping by for a visit! :)

Everybody Wang Chung Tonight!

Much better finish to my Rite Aid transactions today. I had no problems using all my coupons, other than one cashier not accepting my in-circular coupon for the Clairol. Can't fault him though, I gave him one for L'oreal! Duh. I also found out that one store that I love to shop at is also a GNC location, which means they stock the Everlast items.

Just realized I could have used a $1 off $10 household items CRT on these transactions. Duh
Rite Aid - I read online that the UP Rewards for the Purex sheets weren't printing but they must have fixed it because mine printed just fine.
  • Everlast Energy Drink $5.99, used $10 coupon = $4.01 profit
  • Motrin PM (20 ct) $3, used $3 coupon (4/18 RP) and got back $3 +UP Rewards = $3 profit
  • Finish Quantumatic Detergent Dispenser System $10.99 - 50% off sale so $5.49, used $3 coupon and $4 RA coupon = $1.51 profit
  • Clairol Nice 'n Easy Hair Color $7.49, used $2.50 circular coupon, $1 coupon (6/6 P&G), got $2 UP Reward will get back get back $3 (SCR) = $1.01 profit *This SCR seems to be only valid if RA sends you an email about it. I've never seen them do a rebate like this before
  • 2 Purex 3 in 1 Sheets $3 each, used two $1 coupons, two $2 RA coupons and got back $1 UP Reward (WYB 2) = $1 profit
  • Resolve Carpet Spray $5.99, used $1.50 coupon and will get back $0.50 (SCR #108) = $3.99
  • John Frieda Root Awakening Shampoo $6.99, used $2 coupon (6/6 SS) and will get back $1 (SCR #77) = $3.99 - needed a filler to eat up the overage from the Everlast. Save your $3 coupons for next week - FABULOUS sale coming!
  • Used $5 off $20 coupon, total was $4.84, overall profit $5.66
At another friendly store:

  • 2 Purex 3 in 1 Sheets $3 each, used two $1 coupons, two $2 RA coupons and got back $1 UP Reward (WYB 2) = $1 profit

Frustrating

UPDATE - I called RA Customer Service today and spoke to a wonderfully friendly gent who assured me that I was trying to use my coupons correctly. He called this store (and another I've had this issue with) and spoke to the manager to correct them on the policy. As I suspected, it was the same District Manager in both stores. I hope this fixes the problem.
Walgreens - did this transaction twice
  • Bausch & Lomb Renu Multipurpose Sensitive Solution (12 oz) $7.49, used $2 coupon (or regional coupon 6/6 SS or in June Safeway coupon booklet) and got back $7.50 RR = $2.01 profit
  • Hunts Tomato Sauce $0.33 with in-circular coupon
  • Used $5 RR, total was $1.36

Used $4 RR on second transaction. Total was $2.36

Also stopped by Staples to drop off some used ink cartridges - will get back $6 in Staples Rewards for each one. I had six, so that definitely works for me! I had a $1 Staples Reward that was expiring soon, so I picked up a pack of paper clips for $1.29.

Rite Aid - forgot to put this in the pic. Its somewhere in the depths of my purse.

  • Motrin PM (20 ct) $3, used $3 coupon (4/18 RP) and got back $3 +UP Rewards = $3 profit

Tried to do a transaction at a different RA using a $5 off $20 coupon. The cashier said she had to scan it last, which is fine with me because it will still scan if your total ends up being less than $20. Then the Asst. Mgr. came over, started questioning everything (ie. using Video Values coupon with a manu coupon - she was saying they were both manu coupons), voided the order and re-rang everything. She actually told me (told me, the customer!) to get all the coupons in order. I did nothing since they were already all on the counter and she could look for the one she wanted. She scanned each item, found the corresponding coupons, scanned them and then scanned the next item.

At the end of this long ordeal, she tells me I can't use the $5 off $20 coupon because my total was $6. I showed her the RA coupon policy that I carry with me that says you can use this (she had a copy of the same thing) but said her District Manager said they can't do that. A lot of the stores in my area have recently been saying this, so I bet its the same guy/gal for the area. I said I'd like to cancel the order and get my coupons back, to which she replied - "but your total is only $6." Yeah, I realize that. I got my coupons back and DBF and I left.

The whole thing really ticked me off. She had an attitude towards me right from the start. Sometimes, situations like this make me want to throw my hands up and give up. But you know I won't! :) I'll hit another store tomorrow and see if I have better luck. I'm very thankful that I live in an area with so many stores to choose from.

Loving that Neutrogena Profit!

Bought most of this yesterday but didn't feel like posting it all. I also dropped off a large donation of food and household items to a local food pantry. They have a drop off box in the supermarket, so I can make donations after hours. I love it!
Rite Aid - decided to make the best use of the Everlast sale this week. The vitamins are free after sale and coupons and make it easy to get up to $20 to use a $5 off $20 coupon. I was trying to figure out the best way to use the $5 off $20 coupon. Here's a tip for finding stores that stock these - search for RA locations and check off the GNC box on the search filter.
  • 2 Everlast Supplements (only at GNC locations) $19.99 each, BOGO sale, used two $10 coupons = FREE
  • 2 Herbal Essence Sham/Cond/Stylers $2.49 each, used two $1 coupons (5/16 RP) and will get back $3 (SCR #75, $1.50 each, Limit 2) = FREE
  • 2 Old Spice Deodorants (3-3.25 oz) $2.49 each, should have used $1 off 2 coupon but I must have left it at home (5/2 or 6/6 P&G) and will get back $3 (SCR #73, $1.50 each, Limit 2 rebates) = $1.98
  • Used $5 off $20 coupon, total was $3.30, overall profit $2.70

At another store:

  • 2 Everlast Supplements (only at GNC locations) $19.99 each, BOGO sale, used two $10 coupons = FREE
  • Resolve Carpet Spray $5.99, used $1.50 coupon and will get back $0.50 (SCR #108) = $3.99 - really needed this so I was so happy to work out a deal on it
  • Travel size Secret Deodorant $1.29 - probably won't work, but I'm hoping this might count for SCR #81. Someone bought a travel size Secret Clinical and it counted towards one of the rebates. I couldn't find those, so I got this one instead. If it doesn't count, its ok b/c I needed a filler anyway.
  • Used $5 off $20 coupon, total was $0.93
Bought this separately and did same transaction at another store.
  • 2 Everlast Supplements (only at GNC locations) $19.99 each, BOGO sale, used two $10 coupons = FREE
  • Tim McGraw Cologne Gift Set $15.99, used $5 coupon = $10.99 - thought I could get back $5 for this, but the rebate was only good last week. Combined with the $5 coupon, $5.99 is a fine-by-me price!
  • Used $5 off $20 coupon and $1 UP Reward, total was $5.75
CVS - DBF's card
  • 2 Old Spice Body Washes $4 each, used BOGO coupon (cashier took off $5.29, 6/6 P&G) and got back $8 EB ($4 each, Limit 2) = $5.29 profit
  • 3 Powerbars (Pure & Simple, Cranberry Oatmeal and Peanut Butter Flavor) $0.99 each, got back $2.97 EB (monthly deal, Limit 3) = FREE
  • Used $5 EB, total was $1.24

Walgreens - bought a whole lotta razors. I asked the cashiers at a couple stores if they'd mind if I bought a whole bunch. Each store had a ton of stock and the cashiers didn't mind at all.

  • Schick Hydro 3 or 5 Blade Razor $7.99, used $5 coupon (6/13 SS), got back $4 RR and will submit for TMF rebate = $9 profit - will do this rebate three times. The other transactions were a $0.45 profit each (after tax)

Separately, I bought:

  • Schick Hydro 3 or 5 Blade Razor $7.99, used $5 coupon (6/13 SS) and got back $4 RR = $1.01 profit
  • Neutrogena Lip Moisturizer $2.16 (mine rang up with the 25% off sale, but I've heard that this isn't happening in all locations) and two Neutrogena cleansers $4.11 each. Used $2 coupon and two $1 coupons (6/6 SS) and got back $10 RR (WYB 3) = $3.62 profit
  • 100 Grand Candy bar $0.39
  • Used $5 RR, total was $4.05

Then I hit gold and found a store that not only had a ton of the lip moisturizers, but also had a teenage guy cashier who could have cared less how many I bought. I did two transactions, asked him if I could do some more and he said sure. I used up my $2 coupons and even left a bunch on the shelf!

  • 3 Neutrogena Lip Moisturizers $2.24 each (weird how prices vary from store to store!), used three $2 coupons (6/6 SS) and got back $10 RR (WYB 3) = $8.81 profit

Repeated three more times. On the last transaction, I used two $2 coupons and one $1 coupon for a sunscreen item = $7.81 profit

Think these might count towards the $10 Neutrogena rebate?

Driving, Dogs and Decor

Well, I'm very belatedly posting these pics from my weekend trip. What a busy week its been! I got home Sunday night around 7, fed the kitties, fed myself, took a shower, unpacked the essentials, called my hunny and then collapsed in bed. Isn't it strange how driving is so tiring? We left Virginia around noon and were making fabulous time until an end-of-the-world rainstorm decided to slow us down. Traffic was crawling around 30 mph and I could barely see out the window even with the wipers on high.

Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself. My youngest sister and I left Friday afternoon to visit my middle sister in Virginia. She moved there around Christmas and we hadn't seen her condo since we helped her move in. I was excited to see how she'd decorated everything. I love her sense of style and she didn't disappoint. My parents were also going away for the weekend, so with no one to watch Riley (Bootz and Freckles are clearly unfit to supervise), he came along for the ride. I was a little worried about how my new car would fare with Sir Slobbery in the backseat, but the only thing I had to clean were the windows. Phew! We hit some traffic on the ride down and got there around 8. My sister whipped up some homemade pizza (delish) and Riley and Rocky happily rough-housed and knocked into stuff (and us). Shall we be nosy and poke around her condo a bit? Lets!Love these! The colors are so rich and its a great centerpiece on her table.
The previous tenant had painted this one wall red and I think it works. Its bold, colorful and vibrant. And a bitch to paint over, so red it is!
Saturday night, we visited the home decor store where she got all these goodies. Its called Kirkland Home or something like that and is basically a cheaper Pier One. I was in heaven! I restrained myself and only got two pieces - I'll show you how they look once my hunny puts them up for me.
Love the open and airy design of her kitchen shelves.
The honeycomb is such a cute touch.
She has a huge balcony right off her living room with a set of sliding glass doors. She inherited a green thumb from my dad and has some nice flowers and herbs growing out there.
Oblivious to the homey decorative touches, the dogs were happy to see each other and catch up.
On Saturday, we took the dogs to a nearby dog park. I don't bring my camera to dog parks for fear of being tripped and having the camera smushed or trampled on, so I have no photos to share with you. It was a toasty day and the dogs quickly discovered the two plastic swimming pools at the back of the park. At first, they were content with standing in the pools to cool their paws off. Quickly bored with that, first Riley and then Rocky laid down in the murky water and then emerged totally soaked. Rocky wasn't satisfied with just that and decided to roll around in the woodchips and mud. Imagine our delight at the thought of transporting these two soggy dogs back in our cars (both are new) to my sister's condo! Luckily, they both dried off pretty fast and our cars were saved.
After we dropped the pooches off, we headed off to the day's main event: Washington, DC. I hadn't been to DC in years and was looking forward to some sight-seeing. It didn't take too long to find a parking spot by the water and started our walking tour. The Jefferson Memorial was our first stop. The marble columns are beautiful and delightfully cool. At this point in our trip, I was already pretty darn'd hot. I am NOT a summer person. My skin burns within 10-15 minutes of being outside and I hate, hate, hate being sweaty and sticky. I don't mind baking in the sun, so long as there is a pool nearby to jump into. Alas, no pools at this memorial.

Continuing on our journey, I safely stowed my camera within my purse instead of carrying it. I was afraid it was going to slip out of my sweaty fingers! We stopped for a quick lunch and then hiked on to the Smithsonian Museum. I loved the exhibits and how close you can get to everything. As we were stopped at a crosswalk outside the museum, I felt a shiver go through my whole body. Definitely not a good sign! I bought some juice from a vendor and took a breather. At this point, I was way beyond taking pictures since that would involve ungluing my bag from my shoulder, opening the bag, taking out the camera, holding it up to my sweaty face and clicking a button. No way jose, too much effort involved there.

The Washington Monument loomed in front of us and my middle sister asked us if we wanted to walk up and take the tour. After I grunted in response, both sisters looked at me and said, hmm, maybe we'd better not - you don't look so good! We detoured around the monument and headed back to the car. Four or so hours after we arrived, I collapsed in a puddle in my sister's car and pumped those air vents up as high as they could go. After a drink and a shower, I was back to normal, just a little sunburned. I slept well that night!
We woke on Sunday morning to a lovely 95 degree sticky day. I just can't stand that weather! The humidity totally drains me. We hung around in our pj's, had lunch together and then headed back to Jersey. My sister comes home pretty often, but it was great to see her place and spend time with her. Next time, I'm visiting in cooler weather!

WAGging the Day Away

Just Walgreens today. I never thought I'd pay for a shampoo/conditioner again, but I am so in love with these John Frieda Root Awakening products! I figure the profit from the Nivea cancelled out the cost of them, so its all good. Three of the bottles aren't in the pic.
